Taping up the holes won't get you any more power.

mk5 gtis intake is open at the rear also is it not

I modified my original and plastic welded the rear and reflowed the inside to work tha same as a carbonio.

No Golf anymore.
Enjoyed the last five years of ownership of Mk5 & 6 GTIs.
Plus an excellent forum for knowledge and new ways to deplete the bank account.
Thank You Everyone.

they might well have done something as simple as that just to limit power a certain degree for emissions etc

....Which is exactly why I wrote: "On the question of 'Sure, Mr VW knows best', he only knows best in the context of meeting the requirements of various international territories and their very strict legislation."  :happy2:

which is bellow the air filter, where it will be perfectly safe, although there is little point putting tape over it I would imagine. actually might be worth the Plastic welding idea, would flow more air into the filter box, but will never match a proper CAI

Maybe it's there to stop the ram air effect so the engine grabs what air it needs and vents the rest through the hole. I would imagine different speed create different amounts of air flow, this would make the flow nice and even. It kinda makes me wonder why the hole wasn't put on the underneath of the scoop like the Mk5 so as to let the rain water drip out.

Not all mk6's have this hole. I asked about it on another forum a while back. Some of them have it some don't.
