Locking wheels nut woes

Hi all

I had some issues with my standard locking wheel nuts on saturday. Basically they were on really right and i had to get a 1meter bar on it to get them off. This has ended up chewing the locking wheel socket to bits so that now it will only go on with persuasion from a hammer, and then the sockets gets stuck in the bolt.

So.... are McGards the last word in locking wheel nuts? Or should i just get some new OEM ones?

I had the same problem a while back and got some new ones from the dealer. These were a much better design than the factory fitted ones and feel much more sturdy!  :happy2:

Make sure you get them with the right shaped bolt head to suit your wheel Rich (round, tapered e.t.c) :happy2:

I had a similar issue with the OEM locking bolts on my A4 and ended up buying another key from Audi, I went to  order one and was told they had them in stock??? I was surprised to see the guy get a box of around 20 keys and grab one which he handed over and charged £5, " how do you know it'll fit " I asked..... " cos they're all the same throughout the VAG range" he answered!


I promptly went to Halfords and had my eyes out over a set of McGards which i still have fitted to the golf.  I could'nt stand the thought of any Vag owner being able to get my wheels off.
Strangely, I bought another set of McGards in the tapered profile for a different car and the key was the same????

So that just goes to show there is always a chance that some scrote 'could' have the key to fit your locking bolts

If you do get McGards, don't let anyone use a wheel gun on them - They can strip/damage the key pattern. It hasn't happened to me but I know of others who've had this problem.

the set of keys you mention is a master key set of which we have for the scoobys we do at work

I had mcguards on the rear of my 25th anniversary along with spacers and then recently transfered them to my edtion 30. I have found that the key design is prone to slipping off the locking wheel bolt which damages the key and over time it renders the key useless. I got a replacement key FOC from Mcguard and bought a spare while I was at it but now both of these are looking a little 'tired' I think the only way to prevent the keys from slipping off is to use a wheel brace to keep it at a right angle (and as such fully seated) when you apply the force to untighten them.

The OEM toothed design is much better in my opinion but then I need longer bolts due to spacers.

Rather than spend 40 quid on the mcguards, go to sixonetwo (google it) and get their locking bolts.  They are much cheaper and just as good.


....Only about 6 squid cheaper a set (excl shipping) and how are they different apart from the bling finish which would attract extra attention?
