how do you Debage?

am looking to debage the 'back of my white GTI - how do i go about this?

can i get the dealer to do it for me? if so how much do you think they will charge?

do it yourself its simple, warm the badge with a hairdryer and them get some dental floss between the badge and body and sort of saw it off, really easy. Then clean the sticky residue off with some paint friendly degreaser, then maybe a final polish

ah fantastic - didnt realise it was just stuck on with adhesive - thought it might have been screwed in..

is degreaser the best thing to use after you remove them? do i need something strong to get rid of the stickieness?

nothing to strong it might damage the paint, I actually found WD40 shifts it , not sure if that will damage the paint long term but its only on there as minute

wd40 will take the stickness clean off

dunno about the dental floss idea...i would use cotton

Did mine at the weekend. Used dental floss then just pealed the resedue off with my fingers. Took me literally five mins and was the easiest i have ever done, then just polished it up to get the dirty marks off.

at the moment mine has Golf and GTI on the back, both have to go!

another quick question.... the VW metal circle on the boot (boot opener) mine is really scratched - is it easy to replace it for a new one? how much do those parts sell for and could i get the dealer to do it

would try to do it myself but would end up hurting the car

They shouldn't unless:

1. it was added by a prev owner
2. it's not really a GTI!

I de-badged my Impreza which had a load of badges including individual letters for the word Subaru.  As above heat up the badge, I did mine in 60 second blasts as you do not want to damage anything.  And then good old dental floss to saw behind the badge moving it slowly across until it pops off.

I tried the tar/bug remover from turtlewax and left it on for a good 5 minutes on the left over glue and then gently with a credit card (old one you will destory it) got some of it off.  But I also found that warming up the glue with the hairdryer again and nothing else was a good way to shift it as it tended to peel right off.

As for your boot badge it seems you have buy a complete unit which seems to be about £80.  There are a couple of posts about it, I was searching myself for that eariler in the week as mine has got small bits of whiteworm in mine.  I will see if I can find the post again.

mine is an import so that could be why, otherwise could have been the previous owner - although was a middle aged female drive so less likely to put it there...

my guess is that it must be because its an import

either way its gone come this weekend!!

any ideas on replacing the boot metal VW circle? mine is scratched and looking pretty ropey..

As above, they are not available as a seperate part from VW and as such you have to buy the whole handle. They come up occasionally on fleabay, or you could remove it and paint it black?

not a bad idea possibly painting it black, otherwise how much would the handle be to replace?

just completed the debadge - looks much much better, have taken the GTI off the back along with GOLF (for some reason my car had golf on the left side)

and bonus.... the rear is easier to clean!!

Only have to buy the paint for £6, and it takes a few minutes to do!
