Steering Wheel Wobble/Shaking At 70+ Help Please
« on: June 28, 2011, 04:32:48 pm »
As above when getting on the motorway you can feel the steering wheel shaking in your hand & if you let go can see it moving slightly side to side like its wobble. I had four wheel alignment & balancing done but its still there but the front end now feels heavier? I have just put new alloys & tyres on the car & it doesnt feel like its doing it below motorway speeds.

Any ideas please

It sounds simple, but most wheel balancing weights are adhesive. Check & make sure one hasn't fallen off.

Yeah, this is usually a wheel balancing problem or a buckled/damaged alloy. Try getting the wheels balanced again at another garage. I had that problem recently.

Good luck!

Just been to have them done again at another garage, Only had the front two done & they said the drivers front right wheel out 15g & front pass side out 35g. Been on motorway & its still vibrating through steering wheel & wobbling slightly. They are speedline turinis so not crap wheels.

Any other ideas?

Check the alignment settings. There's a good thread on here somewhere. The 'search' tool should find it. Sadly many 'alignment' centres wouldn't know a good alignment if it hit 'em in the face. Worth a second opnion. Considering the first lot couldn't get the wheel weights spot on, I'd doubt their skills.

Although the tyres are new, check thoroughly for bulges or sidewall blisters. I've seen new tyres with hideous defects (albeit rarely).

Have you considered a slightly buckled wheel?

Have a look at it spinning on the balance machine, you'll see if they have a whack in them. ( noticed one of mine is slightly bashed at the minute, but looks perfect :sad1: )

You've got 2 options then:

Send em' back.

Or if they are slight buckled, put em on the rear.

Are there spigot rings fitted with these? If they are missing and you need them this would give you the vibration you are talking about too.

Could the rear wheels need re balancing?

They didnt come with any spigot rings & am sure others that have fitted these wheels dont use them eithier & dont have the problems I am having

Doubt its the wheels or tyres as they are brand new.

Also

Just been reading another thread, the wheels came with a new set of bolts & locking wheel nuts. It looked like the top of the nut where it seats into the rim was different so I used the new wheel bolts provided but with the standard Audi locking nuts. Ive just looked at them & the thread length is the same but the seating on the nuts is different. Could this be my problem as the bolt may be different for each locking nut? Also the new locking nuts dont look as safe as the Audi ones

the problem is either
1.balance
2.out of shape tyre or wheel
3..wheel not positioned correctly on hub

1.balance
2.out of shape tyre or wheel
3..wheel not positioned correctly on hub

1. front two have been re done so only leaves the rears but am guessing because am getting the vibration/wobble through the steering it means its the fronts.
2. They are brand new wheels & tyres
3. They must be on the hub properly as they put the wheel on the hub & lined the bolt holes up.

Surely it could be other things the the disks or ball joints?

if you still have your old wheels try them on to see if you have the same trouble or swap the speed line back to front

then as you mentioned it might be a hub or drive shaft---but am sure if you put your old wheels on the problem will go hopefully
