Starting Problem
« on: June 28, 2011, 09:17:41 pm »
Hi

Ok, so my Mk5 Gti hasn't failed to start yet, but for a while now (particularly if the car has been standing for a while e.g. overnight, over the weekend) when I turn the key to start it from cold it sort of stumbles into life rather than starting positively (almost like it's not getting enough fuel). It seems to perform ok when started and starting after a drive presents no problems.

It's been into the dealer today and it started with no issues, there are no fault codes reported (i.e. no misfires etc) and the spark plugs were changed during the recent service. The car runs a Stage 1 Superchips remap, but I did have this problem before remapping the car so I don't think this is the issue...

Any ideas people?  Possibly HT leads?

Thanks

Russ

Hi Russ!

I think this is standard for the TFSI engine, mine does it too. Plus I think there is a thread about this in the troubleshooting area

How old is your car as this could be the first signs of your battery not holding charge as cold starting is where you neeed max amperage.
Without traction power is nothing!

My car is an '07 plate...yes, battery could be a possibility - interesting that TFSI engine might be prone to this though...

My car is starting to be like this too it just feels like there is not enough punch in it when starting it up in the morning or when it's been sat for a day.
i went out to start my car last friday and the battery was flat so im hoping i don't have an underlying problem with losing power overnight or when sat for a few days :sad1:

If this were to be the problem what is the solution?

The Hpfp just needs whirling over a bit to build up enough pressure to start the engine, the pressure tends to leak back when left for a long time.

If you mean the car starts rough then that's normal.

There was a thread on here with I guy who kept taking it back to the dealer. His car had a lumpy start up. I'm not 100% bu I think he sold the car in the end as he was not 100% happy.

TT advised him to turn the ignition on and lets the lights go out before he started it.

I do this with mine and most of the time it starts cleanly. But it seems to be a characteristic of the TFSI engine. You would think that a modern engine would catch and be smooth straight away.
Bye Bye Edition 30.

Hi guys

Sorry to resurect an old thread but I experience these symptoms too.

I've had the battery changed and a switch on the starter motor replaced (both under warranty as it was showing a fault code), but if the car is left overnight it still often struggles to start the first time. If you start say an hour or two after the first start, it's fine however.

Any other possible reasons for this?

How do I check the fuel is lining the pipes when opening the front door? Would this be a possible cause? I can't hear anything but then I guess you shouldn't be able to hear the fuel being injected...?

Thanks for your help  :happy2:

My 05 plate does this and sounds quite horrible but the amount of times i've seen people post about the very same problem, it seems very common.. Mine sounds awful on first startup even after a new and improved battery installed "Varta E44" if i remember rightly?.. still no improvement on the startup noise.. Its just embarrassing when starting the car up as it sounds like an old dog coughing into life..

Ah sounds I'm not the only one then :). Not related to the carbon deposit build up is it that I've seen mentioned?
