Puddle lights
« on: March 20, 2009, 07:23:47 am »
Does anyone have these installed?

Would appreciate pics of the effect + of the unit.

Anyone installed it themselves?

Looking into it but don't know if it's feasible.

The VWR Golf has them fitted, and I think they do a good job.  I started to look into retro fitting them, but didnt get too far due to work taking over again.

Would be very interested in sorting this.

Definately well worth having, they do light up the floor better than I thought they would and with an LED bulb upgrade would be fantastic! :happy2:

theres another thread somewhere about this, iirc the parts alone are over £400, then you need some wiring and programing, its something i would like, but not worth that hassle unless someone has a simple way of doing it

^^ deffo easier. Tap into the wiring on the red light and dot in some LEDs along the bottom of the door panel.

I've got the puddle lights, they're ok I suppose but need a bulb upgrade for sure - and I just can't be bothered taking them apart.
Sideways yo!

I've upgraded the bulbs in mine with 'Xenon' white sidelight bulbs - easy and worthwhile improvement  :happy2:

....

Are we talking about the 'downlighters' in the base of the wing mirrors?

My 06-build GTI has them already. My dealer friend used his VAS to extend their "On" time for me. Very useful for me to see that I don't accidentally damage my car with my ramps in the dark.

How easy is it to change the bulbs to LED's?

running them under the door rather than the wing mirrors means they would only be 50% effective. puddle lights by their definition are designed to light the area outside the car.

Being on the mirrors, coming to the car or getting out of, the lights flood the ground. if they were under the doors then they would only be effective when you get out of the car and not as you approach it to get in.

for that reason it would be OEM mirrors with LED's or nuthin for me  :innocent:

when i ordered my car i decided i wouldn't need them, now i want them because i haven't got them. In a year or so I will be selling the mrs's EOS and that has got them, wing mirror swap and all's good  :happy2:

VC mate, could you please grab some pics of the lights? Would like an idea of what they're like.

Might buy some second hand door mirrors and do a bodge job.
