Suspect something no right with my DSG
« on: July 07, 2011, 05:32:00 pm »
Hi guys,

just bought my first GTI (DSG) and joined this forum today.  Hopefully some of you guys can help out with some advise here.  My car is an 07 with just under 20k miles on the clock.  I've noticed the car stutters when pulling away in 1st or 2nd and after a longish run, it stutters to a stop.  Not the smooth DSG I was expecting.  I have read there were issues with the DSG box and am now wondering if mine has those typical symptoms.  Does anyone know if VW UK recalled the GTI for DSG problems?  Have you heard of anyones's experience when dealing with VW UK about this problem?

Any help/advise would be most appreciated.

No warranty....

Do you know if it'll damage other parts of the car if I continue to run it until its repaired or is this a fault that can be lived with?

Appreciate your thoughts...

it will only get worse over time unfortunately. You could try and do a scan with VAGcom and reset the DSG with basic settings as a "worth a punt".
have a look in the forum list of vagcom owners to see if someone local can help.
Or take the car to the dealers for them to try doing it, but you may be charged around £50 for a scan.

what reg is the car? 57/08 or an earlier one?

It's a 57 reg.  It's pretty sh8t for a car that only done a little miles.  These forums are good to get some sound advise though.

Some people subscribe to warranty direct, and pay the £300 a year.

Then totally coincidentally, after a few months of having the warranty, a big problem arises with the car. Luckily it's covered though!  :fighting:

Cheers for your advice, very helpful.  I'll check out the forum for VAGCom owners first.

57-08 plate cars seem to have had more fair share then the earlier GTI's with faulty mech's units.

If your service log book has been well maintained and regually visited to a VW dealer, I'm sure they make take this in consideration and offer a 50/50 to help with this problem I'm sure.Call it "goodwill gesture"

Worth a phone call to your local vw dealer

Happened to my mates dsg last week and he took it the dealers and did a software update and fixed the problem so could be worth a try before spending big pennies!

Was this a dealer supplied car or a private buy? Dealers have to warrant cars for 6 months from purchase as faults arising in this period are deemed to have been present at the time of purchase.

If this doesn't fit the bill, get a software reset done via VCDS. There's a chance that may help. DSG 'boxes 'learn'; the driver's style & adapts to it. By software resetting, you clear the memory of the previous owner's driving style.

Fingers crossed.

Does the car have a full VW dealer service history? This usually means that VW UK look favorably on any request for goodwill contributions in cases like this.

Hope you get some joy with this.

Cheers guys.  Car has a full VW service history.  Bought from a dealer, but one I suspect won't entertain the cost to repair a Mechatronics unit.  Very small dealer trading from his house.  I'm going to check with Trading Standards to see if dealers must supply a minimum warranty by law.

Also nipping down to VW today for advise.

So frustrating VW US understood the problem and done the right thing.

I think it would be well worth a reset (basic setting adaptation) it clears the fuzzy logic as Loucyffer said but it also get the clutch plates to re-learn there bite points and shifting patternn (on the prescribed test drive after) my car is an 05 and has at times decided it doesnt like to shift smoothly like a DSG should, basic settign reset helps alot, also driving around in Manual more will help.

Obviously your car has only covered a relatively small mileage and the VW standard for servicing is 40k miles but it has been suggested that you also get the DSG fluid changed at 4 years, if you think about it the wet clutch in the DSG and the gearbox itself are all swimming around in the same fluid, and that fluid hasnt been changed since the car was new so all the swarf off the gears as it bedded in are still floating around in the fluid, and the DSG box also creates massive heat and shearing forces.  So it could be worth a fluid change if the reset doesnt rectify the shifting, especially before going down the expensive mechatronic replacement route.

As Steve mentioned, full VE service history cars that have been serviced to VW spec often see a bit of good will on DSG  mech issues if it comes to that.
