Whining noise
« on: July 07, 2011, 07:45:37 pm »
I have a whining noise that seems to be coming from the front end, more noticeable when going around roundabouts in low gear, don't think its the wheel bearings as that makes more of a whirring than a whining noise doesn't it? Opinions or similar experiences anyone? Diff bearing? Input shaft bearing maybe?

Thanks  :drinking:

No-one? Oh well, I'll reply to myself then!  This looks interesting http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_V--2.0T/Maintenance/Transmission/ES261605 found it from a search of the golfmkv.net forums, looks like it would do the trick!

Are you on DSG? I think its quite common for them to whine in 1st gear.

In my experience, a whining noise from the front of the car, often on roundabouts, overtakes, high speed motorway runs and large retrofit bills, is usually the wife/girlfriend.

Sadly few permanent fixes have been shown to be effective.

Couldn't resist.

Try driving down a quiet road, windows down at 30mph & work the steering wheel from side to side (like F1 cars on the warm up lap). A dodgy wheelbearing will usually make a rumbling noise as the car leans toward the affected side, and go quiet(er) as the car leans away.

Defo not a rumble. Like a gear / transmission whine, it happens in a straight line as well i've just noticed.1st and 2nd gears?

It may happen in all gears but road speed too high to notice perhaps? Does it whine at a standstill? Does it go if you depress the clutch pedal? If so, I'd go for clutch release bearing.

Doesn't whine at a standstill, doesn't disappear when I depress the clutch either.

Mines does the same, maybe all the time but its more noticeable sometimes than others, I though engine, turbo or gears but now I'm just taking it to be normal. Ive got manual edition 30, what's yours?

2005 '55' plate Manual GTI (Not Ed30). 60k on the clock. It see from the stamps in the service schedule it was serviced from 2006 to 2008 in Bridgend in Wales. It just gives me visions of some Welsh git ragging the arse off it around the valleys!   (I Apologize in advance to any Welsh person on here who may read this, it was purely tongue-in-cheek!) I am a TSB though so I can't really take the piss too much!)
