DSG selector back to front?
« on: July 09, 2011, 08:18:33 pm »
Got an Edition 30 with DSG a few weeks ago.

Great car, and I love the DSG too.

But i found the DSG mode selector very confusing at first. It's like they put it in back to front. I mean, (N)eutral is in the middle, fine, but you push it backwards to (D)rive forwards, further backwards to move forwards more quickly ((S)port mode), push it forwards to go in (R)everse, and move it as far away from the handbrake as possible to put it in (P)ark.

Not a big problem - I'm used to it now. But a couple of times when i first got the car I was stopped at lights in neutral and came close to putting it in reverse instead of D.

Still used to driving a manual and pushing the gearstick forwards into first to move off i guess.

Did anyone else find this at first?

I thought that's how all automatics are with PRND?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

In manual mods the stick is the wrong way round though. Most race cars are pull to go up and push to go down.

If I rest my hand on the sticj and slow down the damn thing changes up.

^^ as above x4

The only thing that is wrong in my eyes is the fact that the tipronic is revered compared to most sequential boxes.

(Looks like Hedge beat me to that comment)

Well, as I implied, my last car was a manual not an automatic, and I didn't realise that.

To me, it would have felt more natural for it to be the other way around, but maybe I'm the only one.

Like I said, not a biggie and it'll be second-nature before i know it.

Dunno if it is different on the golf because of DSG but whenever i've driven an automatic, my dad's car or a hire car, i've never once put the thing in neutral at the lights, or any other time for that matter, i've always kept it in D and just covered the brake. when i wanna stop for good i put it in park.

Always wondered what neutral was for on an automatic

^^^ Because flicking it into 'N' and putting the handbrake is easier and quicker than shifting all the way to P.

Just let your foot off the brake pedal a bit slower to give the clutch a chance to bite!  :happy2:
