heavy gearchange ?
« on: July 13, 2011, 08:20:14 pm »
Hi all,

I have a manual mark 5 GTi and it seems to me to have a heavy gearchange, the problem is i don't know anyone with another golf to compare it with. i took the car to a supposed "vw specialist" who without driving the car but just putting it in gear while it was running said straight away that the flywheel is probably knackered and needs changing at the princely sum of 850 quid, after speaking to someone else they have said it most likely isn't the flywheel but maybe the clutch master cylinder.

I'm not sure how smooth the gearchange should be (it's the only thing letting this car down), but i am pretty sure it should be better than it currently is.

Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Where are you based Simon, Im sure a local forumite would let you compare.

Who was the specialist?

When my Flywheel was buggered it was quite noisy (noticeable at tickover by a knocking at rattling)

Hi Mike,

I am in Kent.

The flywheel isn't making any noise which is why the second chap i saw said it is unlikely to be that, although he wasn't much help either, I am thinking of going to AMD in essex to get them to have a look at it, i don't know any people over my way who i trust to sort it out without ripping me off. Not sure if the clutch is heavy or not either, that's why i would like to compare with another golf, but it might be a touch on the heavy side too.

Had my problem diagnosed as pressure plate by main Dealer and replaced unde rwarranty as car is only year old and 12000 miles. Lucky it was not friction plate as that was not covered. Found on the net a common thread of pressure plate failure ??.
Went in for a Landy came out with a GTI, mid life crysis? me :-)

cheers roamer,

I'll have a search for that, see if it soulnds like what i am experiencing. I have no warranty, so i hope it maybe isn't something as serious as that !

It's got 62k on it, and it's a 56 plate. i have only had it since the beginning of the year, so i haven't done much of that myself.
