Need new tyres, help..
« on: July 14, 2011, 07:50:46 pm »
Got a puncture in one of my tyres today so decided to replace the pair, car has 18" Monza II alloys which run 225/40/18 I'm quite sure. What tyres would everyone recommend for performance and value for money?

Also would use recommend run flat tyres...?

DO NOT GET RUN FLAT.....worst things ever designed in my opinion. I have an edition 30 and have to admit that after three different brands of tyres on my car, the best overall was the continental sport contact 3. I am running 225/40/18 and they really are superb for everything....they are truly unbeatable in the rain!!! Hope this helps!! :-)

Falken 452's are cheap, and reasonable performance unless your running over 300bhp. Don't compare to prada spec 2's, eagle F1's etc.. but I found them on camskill for like £70 something each so cant complain.

Falkens are my choice when funds are super tight, wouldnt want to push the car on them but good value for money tyre

Yeah for standard golf they would be sufficient i would imagine. My mate rated them which led for me to try them. didnt go down well on a 340bhp focus RS. I never got traction until 5th lol. Had to swap fronts with backs.

Currently running 330 - 340 so will be taking it steady untill funds allow something grippier again

Dont blame you. I was going to try the uniroyal rainsports heard good things from them and reasonable price. I know the Focus RS boys highly rated the Yoko AD08's, which are a mild version of the A048's i think. Meant to be very good.
Shame you can't buy eagle F1's anymore  :sad1:

Thanks, this helps. I was thinking Uniroyal RS2 tyres as well as I've used them in the past and they're great in the wet and good in the dry too. I'm looking to spend around £100 a tyre, possible a bit more for a highly rated set of tyres.

I've tried having a look on blackcircles for tyres but the website seems t be playing up, anyone else had these issues?
Also are blackcircles and camskill the two cheapest sites for tyres online? :happy2:

Cheapest i know of. If you dont mind part worns, try pistonheads, get alot of tyres for sale on there. I seen a pair of eagle F1's in 225/45/18 going for 120 with 5mm tread on each few months back when i was looking for tyres.

Very much a matter of personal opinion. I would always use premium tyres on a performance car, & stay away from budget ones. After all, your only contact with the road is those four little contact points.

Personal choice: Bridgestone RE050A, Pirelli P Zero Nero, Michelin Pilot Sport, Vredestein Ultrac, Goodyear Eagle F1 (not the NCT ). I used Uniroyal RainSport2 on my Subaru as wet/winter hoops and they held up very well.
Black 2008 5 door GTI. Leather, DSG, ipod prep, 18" Monzas. Retrofitted: Cruise, PDC, RNS510, 729 Skoda Bluetooth (thanks SteveP), MFSW buttons (thanks MortyGTTDi), Armrest & vents, covered cupholder, Highline (thanks Kalu), Polar FIS+ (thanks Richn), Reversing camera (thanks MortyGTTDi)

Try Toyo T1 Sports.  Just fitted some and they grip like a boiled sweet to your pocket :happy2:
