Looking to get ready for winter!
« on: July 16, 2011, 07:23:52 pm »
Guys, quick question. What is the smallest diameter rims I'd get away with to clear the calipers, so I can set the car up for winter?

Car is on 18s ATM :happy2:

My budgeting would mean it wont be long before Im pricing up 17s and winter tyres too  :sad1: lol.

Think I'll be back in the Uk by winter this year but I preach winter tyres, its now law here to have them on.

If the weather is snowy or icy and you are stopped between Nov - Mar without suitable tyres (mud & snow or the ice symbol)
it's 40€ if you get stuck and cause an obstruction €80+

Some how made it through winter with R888s  :ashamed: (oh, yeah by borrowing my bosses V8 Range Rover lol)

LOL  Sorry for the depression :ashamed:

Nows the time to buy, whilst prices are sensible and there is stock. I bought a set of 16s with Conti Winter (5mm part worns) tyres for my BMW last year in August and all in, cost less than £200 :happy2:

I agree with ANILS on this, we left it a bit late last year for the other halfs 1 series and struggled to get some winter tyres, and when we did find some they were very expensive, made a massive difference though :happy2:

When you say 1 series it randomly made me think of the Doc next door asleep in his car (while swapping wheels, it was a 1 series?)

Back on topic, JPC did a rewiew on some pretty impressive snow tyres with video.

I don't think all 16" wheels will clear the caliper.
Ex mk5 GTI owner, moved to a mk6 in 2010.

+1. Washed the car 7am this morning and if you told me it was October, I'd have believed you!

This time last year I would have to wash the car at 5am because the shampoo wash would dry too quickly if I started after 6am!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I don't think all 16" wheels will clear the caliper.

Can ths confirmed? Otherwise looking at 17s.
