test for shutters on xenons
« on: June 29, 2011, 05:48:31 pm »
Hi,
Can anyone help me. I have just bought a set of second hand oem xenon lights off an 07 R32 for my 08 gti. I plan to run the wire back to the highline CECM so I can activate the shutters for high beam xenon light.
I was told by someone in the trade that not all oem MK5 xenon lights were fitted with shutters. Does anyone know how I can test for this without going to all the work of wiring back to the CECM?

Any hep would be appreciated.

An R32 on an 07 plate will most likely have the shutters. If some don't it would most likely have been earlier cars.

All the vw golf xenons had the shutters, although some golfs central electrics module doesn't have the coding for shutters so in essence you would just need a new CECM.

Could you not just wire the shutters to the main beams at the back of the headlights?

Hi Thanks for all the input.
Got all sorted over the weekend. When I looked into the headlight unit I could see the extra solenoid for the shutter.
All working fine now. Its not really that hard of a job to install. The xenons make the car look great so very happy all in all.

good to hear you got it all sorted.

Any place I can have a look at wiring my Xenon's to use as High Beam too? Mine are factory fitted.
In addition, What happens to the Halogen High Beam?

Hi,

This is a link to the guidelines I used. http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a5/HID-retrofit-Jetta-a5.htm

Very thorough and easy to follow. I set mine up to use the halogen headlights on full beams along with having the shutters move up into high beam position. Really strong lights now. You can go with the option of xenon only on fulls if you want.

Hope this helps.
