Dipstick hard to read?
« on: July 17, 2011, 01:28:45 pm »
Anyone else had difficulties determining the actual oil level on the dipstick?

The plastic ended dipstick on my 2005 GTI shows oil above the max position, but shows a much larger/thicker oil level at around 3/4 full. Which do you believe?!

I did wipe it clean and re-test several times, and the engine had been rested for a good few hours - but it kept on confusing me!

Thanks,
Jim

Yes - all readings taken on a flat surface. I took a photo if that helps - you can see there's oil all the way above the max line but the main body of oil stops at about 1/2. But is it full?  :signLOL:

It's half way as that's where the body of oil is. The "oil" at max is just how the dipstick has been coated in oil over time (i.e when your oil level has been at max)
