Oil temperature and level sensor
« on: July 18, 2011, 03:57:58 pm »
Hi all,

As part one of the features of having one of the Polar FIS boxes was specifically to display oil temperature and mine does not (and VCDS shows a -60 degree reading from my sensor) I have been doing some investigation into location part number and addition of a sensor to my car as I have been lead to believe some cars dont have the sensor (on earlier MK5 models)

I have this picture of my car from when it was up on the ramps having an alignment, can anyone confirm if the unit on the sump here is the oil temp and level sensor? it looks the same and is in about the right position.

I will try and shove my head under tonight to take a look but wondered if anyone could save me hugging the tarmac.

Hi Rich

I fitted mine tonight, and can confirm that I do have the oil temperature displayed. My car is May 05, which is about the same as yours I think? Probably no help to you, but I thought I would mention it.

I can't see it not having either. My car has the level sensor (came on all MK5s) and my car is an early 04 plate low spec 1.4. The oil temperature is vital for the car to know so it's got to have it. I think your sensor must be broken.

cheers for all the replys, so to the oddities Kevinm I am getting the same readings you had when yours was broken but no errors in the ECU to say that its broken, which leaves me to think two things, either it broke and the dealer or someone managed to code the ECU to think it doesnt have an oil temp sensor/level sensor, or its broken and the car isnt monitoring it.

As Kevin has confirmed that it looks like I physically have the sensor and cabling on the bottom of my sump then I guess coding is the first place to look.  I have been contemplating servicing the car myself for the first time and I guess that would give me the opportunity to replace the sensor if its gone.

Kevin do you have the part number to hand?

Tony, Nasir good to hear that you all have them mine is an '05 but MY06 car but early so I would think I should have it and really want it to work.

The part number for the sensor is 06E 907 660. It's about €80

Just a thought but if your car is on time and distance servicing I suspect the ECU doesn't really care about the oil temperature and therefor doesn't monitor it / report fault.  IIRC if its set for long life the oil temp is monitored and its one of the criteria that helps the ECU decide when its time for an oil change.

Just speculating aloud here ...

I'm on time and distance and it still threw the fault code.

Rich would you get a second hand sensor on the cheap to check if it works? Maybe plug it in and submerse it in a basin of hot water?

So I took some extra pictures this morning and it is definately an oil sensor!

And it is plugged in

And this is what shows up in VCDS -60 temp and oil level 0 and yet no fault codes, and the timer is on the long life.

So I now need to understand if the oil sensor can be coded in or out on the ECU to monitor or if there is a fuse or relay that might need to be checked!  I also need to get the car serviced and if im getting this changed I need to do it at the same time as you cant change it without loosing all your oil!  :scared:

I like the idea of testing it in hot water before fitting it I could also unplug the cable and see if this throws an error.

Anyone got a screen shot of the coding screen from the ECU or have 5 minutes and access to a car to check if oil sensor can be coded?

Ill have a look at the coding this evening Rich.

When I unplugged the sensor it threw the same code as i listed in the other thread.

Cheers Kevin, Going to have a look myself tonight to see what coding I have and what options it seems very odd that everything is there but not functioning, will have a look back at your other thread as well as I think that had the coding you had for the ECU, is your car a DSG? its obviously an ED30.

After some research I have just had a thought!  I found a wiring diagram that someone had for the oil temp sensor, it shows that the wiring goes to the cluster not the ECU directly and after installing my US highline it is probably defaulted to oil temp sensor not connected to instrument cluster as it is primarily used for longlife servicing.

Wondered if anyone had any thought on this?  And why if this is the case did Kevin get an ECU fault for somethign that is linked to the clsuter adaptation channels (if my assumption is true that its cluster coding thats needed)

Rich,

Taken from the Ross Tech site: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Instrument_Cluster

Check adaptation channel 39

Channel 039: Oil Level Sensor Adaptation
Determines if the TOG Sensor is installed or not.

Regards.

Thanks Baz,

Thats exactly what I did tonight and now I have oil temp in the Polar!!   When the cluster was re-fitted the TOG sensor wasnt coded in the adaptation channel.  From what I understand the sensor has 3 cables one is an earth in the engine bay, one goes to the ECU and the other to the cluster which together make the loop.  When the cluster was retro fitted the TOG wasnt activated which is off on US cars as standard and so the sensor wasnt doing jack!  :pomppomp:  Im now very happy as I was about to replace the sensor and the bloody thing is £80!

Thanks all for your advice and help!  :drinking:

^^I just discovered the same thing. Ive been out in the car for the last 2 hours. My highline was from a US car too.

Veedubster beat me to it  :congrats:
