Re-setting the 'Tyre montior display' light on dashboard?!
« on: July 19, 2011, 09:14:22 pm »
Does anyone know how to do this - or the steps needed to remove the light?!

The light popped on going round a roundabout.  Had a little check of the tyres, wear n tear / pressures etc all seemed fine!

A freind driving a ED30 said it was easily re-settable - his method has thus far not worked!?

.... and is it possible there is a larger problem than i first anticpated.  Are there common errors with the sensors etc etc?  Any help much appreciated...

Thanks.

Because it's a passive system, working on the rolling circumference (I think) of the wheel, any variation can set it off - new tyres, different alloys, lower pressures etc - all mean the system needs to be "reset".

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I suspect he is looking at the cruise control reset button.

I thought it was the one that controls the MFD - allows you to reset lifetime mpg/average mpg etc.

Could be, but I was thinking about  the cruise control on the left stalk has a set and reset switch at the end of the stalk.

@DSGAndy.. this is the 'SET' button you're looking for..  the one with the symbol on that looks fairly similar to the warning light on the dash!  :happy2:

No questions are too daft on here.. that is what this place is for!

Also, remember that everytime you check pressures, add a little air or, as Stealth says, remove the wheels for any reason, always reset with the above button  :happy2: When you hear the 'bong' you're light will extinguish & you're good to go.

Think mine might of broke actually, I had 17's on months back, went to 19" Omanyt Reps with different tyres, sold them back to 17's and then to my Monza 2 Reps with new tyres and it never came on once? Normal :S

it has been on in the past when I hit a put hole when I first got the car? Any ideas on how to check it chaps? Common fault?

Sorry for the hijack!

@Betty02 you should try VCDS scan. The system works by detecting a change in rolling resistance of one or more tyres as compared to the others. In a puncture, the rolling resistance increases at the affected corner & the system will see this & alert you. I think it uses the ABS sensors for this.

If all four wheels are changed & the rolling resistance of all are the same it can 'fool' the system into thinking there is no change, as no differential is noted between all four. I ve forgotten to reset after changing to winter tyres & wheels and it was several days before I got a warning.

The chances of the driver not noticing 4 punctures is very low, so that is why a comparative method is used. It isn't a true pressure monitor, in that is doesn't physically measure the inflated pressure, just the rolling resistance when you tell it with the button that pressures are correct. A deviation too far from your 'set' normal will alert the system.

Yeh fellas! It was the crusie control reset button.  Tbh I thought it was a little odd when my mate (respected car journo for Parkers) told me that was the button to reset it - or at least it was for him on his ED30..  ??

Thanks for the help.  - How the f@#k I missed the reset button next to ESP button I'll never know  :ashamed:
