HELP! clocks reading error

Just seen a mkv gti for sale but the advert says "car has a problem with clocks it reads error when started and goes away after 30 seconds
i have bought new clocks they will need coded to the car when fitted."
anyone give me any feedback on this, should i avoid? what could the problem be?
