Cracked RCD-510. Need help with disassembly
« on: July 17, 2011, 08:46:44 pm »
Hey guys (from across the pond). I drive a MK5 R32 in the states and replaced my OEM MFD2 with an RCD-510 a while back. Unfortunately, upon first installation, I didn't completely "click" the latch on the power connector and my RCD would occasionally act funny (sound coming out of only one side of speakers) when I hit a bump - because of the loose power connector.

When I went to fix this issue, because it was loose, I accidentally dropped the RCD onto my e-brake and shattered the screen. Now the radio works fine - all except for the touch screen. The topmost layer doesn't feel cracked per se but the layer beneath it obviously is.

I've recently noticed that there are ways to source new LCD displays for these headunits. However, I'm having a hard time with the disassembly of mine, mostly because I can't find a Torx T7 driver or socket anywhere locally.

I have a couple of questions for you guys. My google searches led me here.

Would the RNS LCD display in that link work on an RCD?

Can anyone give me more insight as to how to remove the LCD display from my RCD in order to replace it? By looking at the headunit, I feel that I have a general idea and need to remove the T7 torx screws mentioned above but not 100% sure.

I kept seeing "Darren" being referenced in the threads I stumbled upon so hopefully he sees this thread.

Oh, pictures of the damage as well:

Again, running your fingers over the topmost layer feels smooth. It's the layer underneath that is cracked and rendering my touch screen useless. It doesn't respond to any input via the touch screen. Aside from that, headunit works as it did prior to me dropping it. Just tired of seeing it like this and thinking that replacing the LCD display may be more cost effective than replacing it altogether.

Hi,
I dont know if the layout of the RCD is the same as the RNS, however, if it is, then it should be a piece of cake to remove teh front panel to replace the LCD.

with the unit facing towards you on the bench (screen toward you), on the sides of the unit you should see four torx screws, and i very much doubt its a T7 by the way, i found the RNS used a mix of T10 and T8 torx bits, both should be available quite commonly.

remove the four torx screws on the right and left of the unit and the front fascia should then be able to be removed from the main body of the unit, be very careful and move it forward slowly as there are two ribbon cables that need to be detached, one for the front panel and one for the SD card reader.

the way to remove this is to use a thin plastic 'implement', i found a 'disposable knife' (like the ones you get in picnic hampers/with your sandwiches) works best to gently pry out the 'tabs' either side of the ribbon and then the cable should slide out. do not force anything!

once thats off, it should be straightforward to open up the front panel and swap out the LCD.

good luck!

The RCD is a different unit to the RNS apples not much but because of the changer inside you need to make sure you don't damage it taking it apart, best to speak to SteveP on here has I sold him a screen to repair one he had so I believe he may have swapped one out.
