Another thing to consider is to buy from a VW Dealer. I got one for a similar price, 07 56 plate with 28k miles on the clock and it had some nasty marks to the body work - no dents and nothing severe but i'm fussy and they were certainly something i wouldn't put up with for the price. The car drove well and other than the nasties on the bodywork it had been pretty well looked after. It was my condition of purchase amongst other stuff like getting the Cambelt done and alloys refurbing that they made the bodywork like new, which they did.
If you buy from the VW Stealer they will also MOT the car on sale and if you get lucky like i did then they may have even serviced it when they took the car on so you'll have a year before it's due another.
You do however pay a bit of a premium compared to the market rate but shop around amongst the dealers local(ish) to you as some will be more competitively priced than others. Obviously you would get the same car from a dealer or a private sale for cheaper and have room to haggle on price but then pretty much what you see is what you will get and if there are any problems once you drive off the forecourt/from their house then those problems are your pleasure to deal with.
Stealers don't like haggling on price but you can haggle on the condition of the final car you end up getting from them at that price - so along with the stuff above i got new front brakes and 6 months tax thrown in for free, 2 year service plan for £250 rather than £350 and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in the first 30 days then it is their full obligation to fix it for free whilst providing me with a courtesy car if necessary or i can simply get all my money back.
Luccyfer put me on to this route and despite me being a fussy so & so it made finding the car i was after much easier
p.s Reflex Silver is by far and the way the best colour
red was one of my avoidance colours
