Stone chips on car I like
« on: July 21, 2011, 02:00:07 pm »
Hi,

I have seen this car...http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201122389274414/sort/priceasc/usedcars/ni-only/on/maximum-mileage/up_to_60000_miles/model/golf/make/volkswagen/keywords/gti/radius/60/page/1/postcode/bt69dx?logcode=p

The price seems decent for a dealer although I would be looking to pay less as it doesn't have xenons. The main problem is the number of stone chips on the bonnet. They are all through just to the undercoat (white) and was wondering how much I should ask off the current price to fix this...or am I just being fussy?

Thanks,
CD

I would budget around £500 for a full bonnet and wings to be re sprayed. But by respraying you will make the paint softer and be more prone for it to happen again.

You could drive around with a Full frontal Bonnet Bra but that looks just hidious!

Or you could try filling them with Tornado red touch up pen, wet sand/polish and try restoring it that way.

My Ed30 is showing its 58k's worth of chips... but it will get sorted, just a few other "Must have 1st's" before that though.

Thanks Steve. When you do come to getting that sorted do you think you will respray or have the filled and buffed?

I think i will respray, and then have the clear film stone chip projector put on the front to try help slow down the "rash" of chips.

Although i have a friend thats offered to Detail the car and have a go sorting mine out.
The best thing to do is try filling the chips with Touch up pen, so if its then wet sanded back by someone confident in doing this , it should completely remove them and be less noticable.

Its par for the course when it comes to Tornado red. White cars hide it well. Red and Black with the white underneath always stand out  :sad1:
Trouble is Red is the best looking colour for the GTi imo.

Depends how many your talking about.. as 4 years old, going to have a few. If its bothering you that much and you have that sort of money to play around with continue looking. I've only just bought and i know there was a very mint red one going, was 2006 but had low mileage like that and no problems with bodywork. Probably still on pistonheads.

. Good price.. But my mate who is a prof sprayer hates doing red cars as v.v hard to get an exact match due to sun fading even when highly polished /protected ....

I've had very good results from the mobile stonechip guys, who are very reasonable, much cheaper than a respray too.

Thanks folks. I'll go have another look and make my decision. The car has been sitting on the forecourt for a month now so I'm sure there's a deal to be done :-)

Apparently it was traded in as part exchange on a second hand sirocco. How much do you reckon the dealer gave the person?

under 10k i bet. talk them down on the tax side of things, as most traders cash in on the remaining tax and sell it without any as they unsure how long it will sit there for. I got another £200 off mine ;)

Another thing to consider is to buy from a VW Dealer. I got one for a similar price, 07 56 plate with 28k miles on the clock and it had some nasty marks to the body work - no dents and nothing severe but i'm fussy and they were certainly something i wouldn't put up with for the price. The car drove well and other than the nasties on the bodywork it had been pretty well looked after. It was my condition of purchase amongst other stuff like getting the Cambelt done and alloys refurbing that they made the bodywork like new, which they did.

If you buy from the VW Stealer they will also MOT the car on sale and if you get lucky like i did then they may have even serviced it when they took the car on so you'll have a year before it's due another.

You do however pay a bit of a premium compared to the market rate but shop around amongst the dealers local(ish) to you as some will be more competitively priced than others. Obviously you would get the same car from a dealer or a private sale for cheaper and have room to haggle on price but then pretty much what you see is what you will get and if there are any problems once you drive off the forecourt/from their house then those problems are your pleasure to deal with.

Stealers don't like haggling on price but you can haggle on the condition of the final car you end up getting from them at that price - so along with the stuff above i got new front brakes and 6 months tax thrown in for free, 2 year service plan for £250 rather than £350 and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in the first 30 days then it is their full obligation to fix it for free whilst providing me with a courtesy car if necessary or i can simply get all my money back.

Luccyfer put me on to this route and despite me being a fussy so & so it made finding the car i was after much easier  :happy2:

p.s Reflex Silver is by far and the way the best colour  red was one of my avoidance colours  :P

Thanks Frenzy. Good solid advice. Going to look at the car this weekend and I'll be able to make a final decision based on what you and others have said. Manhy thanks!
