Why a lightweight battery?

As many of us know, the OEM battery weighs about the same as a bungalow. (25Kilos springs to mind)

With the number of track days been discussed recently and our unholy obsession with knocking those fractions off the 1/4mile
many of us are willing to take reasonable measures to squeeze a few more ponies out or lose a few Kilos here or there.

Alot of us have resorted to TT lower (alloy) arms and hubs to save a few kilograms.  I'm looking forward to fitting the NQS BBK from DaveB
to shed alot of weight form my brake setup, along with air con removal and the plan of carbon bonnet should be a sucesful diet!

Where from?

I have been in contact with Paul at Linden batteries;

http://lindenbatteries.co.uk/braille-batteries/

Linden Special Vehicles
Booth Drive
Wellingborough
Northamptonshire
NN8 6GR

Tel: +44 (0)1933 670982

He has been quick to reply to my E - mails and very helpful.

Fitting

They come with terminals and are ready to go (there are quick release terminals and side post terminals if you want those).

The extras you might need is a mounting kit or a bracket and hooks as the battery is obviously smaller than a normal one. Depends how you are planning to keep it in place and whether you can use what you have already.

I plan on mounting mine in the OEM position for the time being.  If positive results come from the new ITG inlet (that requires more space)  I'll shift the battery to the boot.  This will require some cabling and access to the bulkhead ( behind glovebox)

Heavy duty velcro that people use to hold Subwoofers & I have used for my front number plate is more than upto the job.  Linden Batteries also sell various mounting accessories.

Geeky bit

The battery that started the revolution – The B14115 is the most popular lightweight automotive specific battery on the market today! With a weight of only 11.5 pounds and plenty of power to start V-8 engines, see why racers and car designers demand this battery.

Braille Lightweight Battery, model B14115. Designed for daily and race use in most vehicle applications. With over 900 Pulse Cranking Amps and weighing under 11.5 pounds this battery will provide the power needed for most production vehicles and save between 20 - 50 pounds over a stock battery.

- Environmentally SafeHigh Density Oxide. This enables Braille to produce a "High-Cycling" lightweight battery
- Heat Sealed Top Battery Cover Eliminates Electrolyte leakage

- Heavy Duty Automotive PostsResist Damage from Vibration of Heavy Use
- Easy installation
- Calcium Full Frame Power Path Grids Provide Highest Cranking Amp to Weight Ratio
- Lowest Self-Discharge Rate

How much?

I have chosen the; B14115 - Braille No-Weight Daily Use Battery (5Kg) (details above)  So has RobH from SCN and here.  Aaron66 opted for the similar spec TR battery.

The Braille offers significant weight loss at the cost of £134.99, Paul has offered 10% discount to Members of Mk5GolfGti.co.uk and SCN
making the cost - £122.71 inc VAT & next day delivery

There are Carbon versions for those of us with Hurdy syndrome

Paul said if there is enough interest he can get the 'techies' to add a discount box to enter the Mk5gti discount code, for the time being a quick a call and mention of this thread will suffice.

My order is placed and I cant wait to get it fitted! Shame I have to wait until I get home to Uk next weekend to pick it up form the in - laws  :sad1:

I will point RobH & Aaron to this thread incase they have any points as Im sure Ive missed something.

Review to follow!

Stevie, out of interest. How have you secured your battery down?

The 'Heavy duty' adhesive velcro I used for my front no plates is hardcore.  Said on the packagin it could hold like 10 - 15kgs to a wall  :surprised:
Has survived 2 years of autobahn and pressure washer.  Failing that there are mounts on the Linden site.

RobH is currently using a mini ratchet strap until he has time to sorrt a more permanent soloution

Fitted one of these yeasterday and the only difference between this and the oe battery is its 12kg lighter. Win win situation.

No issues with starting it this morning either :happy2:

Need to improve how ive mounted it which is this weekends job.

Rathect strap will be the permenant solution mike, will hold the battery in place easy.

Cheers Rob.

Ill be shedding a few kilos next week; Braille battery, air Con pump out, NQS BBK     Carbon Bonnet at a later date and I'll call the weight saving a day.  Seats out for track days etc and mayyyybe a pole position for my side of the car (although I'm hardly 'the larger racer')
