Help from the IT experts please.

I've got a problem that seams to be getting worse at the mo and need some help from the IT guys.

Problem is with network/WIFI/Internet on the laptop. It keeps dropping the internet off even though it still says it has a very good connection to the router. I keep getting "The DNS server isn't responding" error message.

The other laptop is fine as is the iPhone.

Laptop in question is runnig windows 7 32 bit with a Atheros AR9285 wireless adaptor. I've tried updating the driver  ut it sealms that it's fully unto date.

Any thoughts guys?

Wifi channel on router, windows updates has an update for that card under "other"

Also in netowrking and sharing center under advance adapert settings, right click wireless network, goto properties, untick ipv6, double click on ipv4 select use the following dns and put in 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 press ok and ok again. PM me if you get stuck

But surely the other laptop and iphone are using the same wifi channel  :confused:

Also in netowrking and sharing center under advance adapert settings, right click wireless network, goto properties, untick ipv6, double click on ipv4 select use the following dns and put in 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 press ok and ok again. PM me if you get stuck

You wifi card is the most annoying card out, its like a woman, even though everyone else is happy watching topgear she want gokwan on the other channel!

Still got the problem and its doing my head in now  :fighting:

Tryed updating the router software but it seams to be the latest version...

Still think its the laptop wifi driver  :sad1:

If the other clients are fine, its more likely an issue with the laptop end.
Does it pick up an IP address OK?
Are there any specific settings on the router that you've configured yourself?

A mate of mine had the same issue with his old laptop. It seemed every time the laptop heated up a little, the wifi would cut off!

Yea, I'm sure the problem is with the laptop too..

Not manualy changed any settings on the router..

How would I check if its picking up a IP address ok?

It all started when I changed from Windows 7 64bit to 32bit  :sad1:

Open a CMD prompt

Start and type CMD in the search box on the start menu

then type ipconfig /all

This will list all the network devices, you are looking for one with a IPV4 Address with an address of something like 192.168.x.x (if you see a 169.x.x.x address then your router isn't issuing an address

I had a sililar problem a year ago when I bought an Acer netbook. I just couldn't get it on to the wireless network. All other phones / laptop / devices hooked up fine. I had to log in to the router and change the channel number and this solved the issure for me.

Hate IT issues - can't see them, smell them, hear them or fully undertstand them most of the time!

I have an asus netbook with that card and its sh*t.

I even found an updated driver on a driver site and I had to roll back as it was worse.

I have now given up and am going to sell it.

It's definitely gonna be the channel of the wifi

I don't see why a war 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address is a faulty router that address is generated by the OS/hw when a stable network isn't present

I would use a network lead to connect it to the router and use it like that to see if the OS/network still drops it while hard cabled in

If you are getting the 169.x.x.x ip then assign a static ip address to the wireless netowrk card, you could also create a DHCP reservation on the router for this laptop using the same static ip address that you asigned above. But I doubt this will help as it appears that you wireless adapter might be the problem. Make sure you have the latest drivers for the card installed, look in the event viewer for any errors that might be related to the network card, that would be the first place to start, in the interim just get yourself a pcmcia network card, maybe a decent brand until you can sort this out. Also check for bios updates from the manufacturers site for the laptop.  I am sure this can be resolved but to be honest would be easier to fit a new card on there, you could also change the interneal wiresless card depending on the laptop. Give me the full model number of the laptop and I will try help you find a replacement.

The laptop in question is a Sony Vaio VPCEE3E0E, was running Windows 7 64bit out of the box but I've now changed it to Windows 7 32bit (which is when the problems started...).

I've ordered a cheapo USB WIFI dongle so I can ruel in/out that the problem is with the WIFI card (is the WIFI card 32bit compatable?).
