EDITION 30......WORTH KEEPING?

DILEMMA TIME !

Is the Edition 30 one of those cars thats worth hanging onto for years. Mine has 18000 miles and i do not anticiapte doing more than 3k a year. Every time i get rid of a car i wish i'd kept it..... I am not thinking of selling it yet but am always on the lookout for something different. Now Frodo-Anni is selling his 2002 edition 25 and appears to be struggling to sell it at the £6795. What would an Ed 30 be worth at ten years old? Would a Ed30 be less sought after as there were more made?

Im going to keep hold of mine purley because i love the car to bits. If you are worried about re-sale value when the car is ten years old, then perhaps a more exotic car may be more suited?

I would imagine that at ten years old, standard Ed30 in decent condition would be in demand.

it may or may not have an effect for the Edition models but you may take into consideration that the MkiV wasn't exactly universally praised where as the Mk5 was critically acclaimed and seen as a return to form for the Golf GTI - go on any buying guide and it'll say as much which i'd guess would be influencing the buying thoughts of anyone in the market for a GTI and a Edition GTI.

It's the best looking mk5 GTi in the looks department, it's got huge tuning potential with the larger turbo, over the Std GTi, I'd say it's a keeper.I'm going to hold onto mine as long as it's fiancially possible.I enjoy her too much to let her go, or to go anywhere near as fast without spending 50k on new metal that would try to/match it's grin factor..

it's a hard car to replace IMO. Took me 3 times to realise this , all very costly,

From 30 years+ of golfs it does seem from my experieence that the ones not liked by the enthusiast at the time become the collectable ones. This happened with the mk1 campaign and the runout 91/92 mk2 GTIs as the enthusiasts all complained at the time of not worth the extra looks etc etc. Its also shown that an original non messed about with example is what people want, not a modified one, if its modified its not sort after and no different to other models.
So i would say the Pirelli would be the one people look for in 10 years time but a high factory spec unmolested Edition 30 in good condition would also be rare by then and sort after to a slightly lesser degree. Thats just my view and take it as such.

My issue has been getting people to come and view the car....

Had plenty of phonecalls over the last two weeks and 6-7 offers ranging from £5k-£6.5k. What i find strange is that people make offers over the phone without seeing the car, also people make offers subject to viewing then dont show up!!! 

A car will never really gain value in my opinion, all you can do is minimise the level of depreciation, i paid £12k for the anni in april 06, 5 years + later, time will tell what i will accept.....

When I was looking at MK4 GTIs it was the Anniversary one that I was after. But then I saw the MK5 and bought the ED30 instead! 

I think as others have said, the mk5 was a leap forwards compared to its predecessors. I imagine even the mk7 won't ever be as well regarded. Maybe there'll be another leap in a few generations.

As said i think the mk5 will hold its value better than the mk4 but i still reccon you will lose half the value of what it is worth just now in the next 4 years though, at the end of the day its never going to go up you just need to think to your self can you deal with loosing that much money over a few years and do you like the car enough to keep it?


As someone else said about them owning a few MK5 gtis before, im in the same boat this is my second mk5 gti as i regretted selling the first one, and ill be keeping it till the edition 40 comes out !

I think the Ed30 is a keeper.

My view is that the Mk5 was a proper Gti and somewhat of a return to form for the marque/model.
Cannot remember who was in charge at Volkswagen then, (Ferdinand Piech?) but Mk5 GTi was something he wanted right after the Mk3/Mk4 models. I seem to remember he was a right petrolhead.
Then the 30 year version and also the Pirelli improved that even more.

Personally I like the half leather/tartan look of the seats and the spoked BBS wheels they came on, so for me I prefer the Eddy rather than the Pirelli, accepting the latter is a rare beast.

Of course being just a normal car it will depreciate, but it's a nice thing to drive, after 4 and a half years it still makes me chuffed to own it. Honestly I don't especially like the Mk6 look myself, only the R appeals as it's 4WD.

Just my view.
