Well...

4 studs snapped in the head on removal of the old turbo.  One bolt was also seized into the head where the heatshield/water pipe runs.  Then noticed that the head gasket was weaping oil and water. Popped the engine out to whip the head off. Head gasket had corroded between layers.

Then saw that one of the bores was polished up like a mirror and the others were not so good either. Removed the sump, checked crank float one of the thrust washers had worn.

Head needed the studs removing, the stronger valve springs fitting, new exhaust guides (which was a first) and the exhaust valves were badly pitted so needed cutting too.

For an engine with such little mileage its odd it needed so much work.

It's almost back together but I have another job ahead of Mike's which wasn't even booked in for this much work in the first place so lucky I've even got this far with it working it in around the two jobs booked before it.

Absolutely beyond me the state of the engine. Always warmed up and cooled down.  Had more fresh oil that Ive had hot dinners, 1st few years on Aral/BP 102 ron and Tesco 99 Momentum since then.

Did you say the valve coloration looked as though it had been running unusually hot, @vRSAlex ?

What brand of software have you been running Mike?  :signLOL:

Haha, fair enough ;)  R-Tech soon...

Fingers crossed engine will be in today and who knows maybe turned over  :jumping:

Clutch hardline :)

Oh very nice Mike!

Does this go straight into the oem bleed block / tee piece?
Who makes this?
I was searching on the Internet for one of these but gave up in the end.

@vRSAlex at AKS makes them.  It does away with the rubber pipe and extra joint that always pops off when Uprated clutch is fitted.

It goes from the bulk head to the bleed block

Ok thanks Mike I've bought stuff from Alex before with good experience.
Very nice car and build by the way!
I take it the flanged joint on the Downpipe is to mate up to one of Alex's custom exhaust systems?

Is the valve pitting anything to do with the APR map?
Have you burnt a spark plug out in the past?
Have you had any loss of cylinder pressure?
Golf R gone.

Has a compression test a while back as part of a health check. Seemed fine.

Alex did say the valve stem colouration look as though it had been running 'hot' iirc.

Had slightly blackened plugs but that was when I was trying '8s and probably pootling around too much
