Idiot guide to 1/4mile?
« on: July 26, 2011, 03:53:20 pm »
How can you have a poor reaction time but still run a quick 1/4mile? Does the computer do its sums and work it out, if it doesnt count then whats the point? I know at inters you break the beam so really you could be sitting there for 2secs and still run a PB. Also this 60ft time is this just another measurement to record other than 0-60? Why so many variations, i like the 0-60 this 60ft time means nothing to me really? What is recorded with you boys/gals down south york and at the pod? Stevie.

.
Ignore the other car at the lights and leave when you are ready. As I understand it, a NHRA approved quarter-mile will time you individually.

Modern day 1/4 mile tracks only record your time once you have moved and broken the beam (same as @ Inters). So (like you say) you can sit there and go when you are ready and still record a good time..
60ft times are all to do with your launch. People who are into drag racing will concentrate vastly on this, as it has a big impact on your final ET (time). Every 1/10th second gained on your 60ft time is generally doubled by the end of the strip (so will be 2/10th quicker).
4WD cars and best with 60ft times, then RWD then FWD (same as on the road). But once slicks are involved, they can all take massive amounts off your 60ft time..

Best is when you let the other car leave first, but still beat it across the 1/4mile...

Cheers for the replies. So reaction time counts for nothing? My quickest time was my worst reaction time. Need to practice 60ft if it counts as much, would like another 0.2sec in my pocket. Stevie.

Reaction time needn't be your first concern when still learning. You can focus on that later.  :happy2:

Still wondering where the point of it is though? You can sit there for 1.2secs after light goes green and still run a 11.8sec run? Dont get it??? 10.6sec run, no? At inters there is no reaction time is there? What about pod/york, whats recorded?

reaction time doesnt say anything about a cars performance though, hence why it doesnt count.  All that matters is how long it takes you from stationary to the 1/4 mile

Reaction time is all about racing the guy next to you/first across the line (ie Top Fuel boys).. For us mere mortals who want to see what our every day cars can achieve time wise, it's not really an issue..
