Electrical problem..car wont start..Urgent help needed!
« on: August 11, 2011, 08:39:10 pm »
Evening all,
So, today I decided I wanted the origional radio back in my car which I knew exactly how to do. Once the origional was connected I decided to turn the engine on just to make sure the radio turned on and off with the car before replacing the trim and all was fine. I then disconnected the radio again to try and sort the bluetooth kit which I have had loads of problems with but ended up leaving it disconnected. I then just reconnected the radio put all the trim back and left it.

A few hours later I came to the car to go into town and turned the key and nothing happened, didnt even turn over. after some inspection I found all the electrics worked (radio, windows, lights etc) but no engine lights were shown on the speedo. I have talked to a few mates and a local garage and no one can decide what it could be. I have checked all the fuses, tried push starting and jump leads but nothing worked. An uncle came to have a look for me and he said I may have disturbed some sort of cable or connector when i was changing the radio and thinks I should take all the trim off around the glove box to see if I can find a loose cable.

Has anyone had anything like this or maybe knows what could be wrong. Obviously the car wont start so I cant get it to a garage and dont really want to pay to be towed to one to find out it was just a cable come loose.

Thanks
Rich

Didn't someone else do this and knock the canbus wiring or something?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

You need to check the battery voltage as a first port of call, if that around 12v then you can rule out a flat battery, if no lights on cluster are coming up are you getting noises from the engine bay when you move the ignition on ready to turn over?  If its making clicking noises and a low squeel comes form the engine bay then you have power.  If you get nothing from the car but clicking from the cluster then you have less than 12v from the battery.

If you have flat battery with less than 12volts you wont be able to push start it, and when I tried jumping my car with the girlfriends clio and it wouldnt provide enough juice to sort the problem, RAC came out with a jumper box and it started up.

There is no noise coming from the engine bay, just a click from the cluster as you said. the battery is only a couple of months old and the car was starting fine before I changed the radio. if it is the battery as you said would all the other electrics still work as normal?

it was a fuse. one that looked fine by eye was actually blown. In case any one has the same problem it is one of the yellow maxi fuses in the engine bay fuse box
