Mk6 1.8TFSI?

With a view in mind to a new whip which is around a year away, I browsed through a handful of 1.8 TFSI Audi A3's in the face lift 8P shape. That engine appeals as it's no slouch, 40mpg combined and pushing 50mpg on a long journey where steady. Means I can stay in a petrol too which is my initial preference  .

I then couldn't really understand why there's no Mk6 Golf offering with the same engine? The A3 range has traditionally offered all of the Mk5 platform engines (IIRC) and from what I can see, this is the only one missing from the Mk6 platform that the sister 8P3 offers?

Is there a specific reason? I suppose from a marketing point of view there's no massive gap and VAG would hope that the A3 1.8 TFSI mops up that little area of the market for interested prospective buyers - ?

Was just a thought... I'd love to know if there's a technical reason or whether there's simply not the demand perhaps with the Fabia/Polo/Ibiza etc... available with that block?

The Octavia gets the 1.8 TSI engine and you can have it with 7-speed DSG as well.

Dunno why the Golf doesn't.

The Golf big engined petrols don't sell like the diesels. You either buy the small petrol engines or you go diesel. If you want petrol performance you go for the GTI or R. Audi doesn't have a 'GTI', so I guess people don't feel short changed.

For example if you bought a 1.8T Golf it would be because you couldn't afford the GTI for whatever reason. Whereas if you bought an A3 1.8T S Line, it's just that to most people, an S Line.

It comes down to peoples perceptions, people still don't get why I have a petrol 1.4 Golf. Everytime it's why didn't you buy a diesel? The answer it wasn't within budget and insurance at the time. Nobody would say why have you bought a GTI and not a 2.0TDI because the GTI has better performance.

Was it pre-facelift Steve (i.e. before 58' plate)?
The MY 04-08' 1.8T FSI A3 on paper does about the same MPG as the Mk5 GTI which would make sense...

^ Front wheel drive and Sportback was it Steve? I vaguely remember it in one of your threads.

That's a shame that it's no improvement on the k03/4 2.0T FSI for economy considering it carries 40 less hp.

Front wheel drive yes but it was 3 Door S-Line 7 Speed DSG

Personally if it wasnt the flagship model petrol engine I would go for the 2.0TDI. Reasonable performance with better mileage.


The 1.8T isnt all that quick anyway. Like Steve has said, the economy isnt that great unless your doddling about on the motorways.

The OP mentions its no slouch which im assuming is a big factor in selecting a car. For local stop start driving and spirited drives it will get similar figures to the GTI.


I personally have never seen the point in that engine. I would go for a dirty diesel all day long over the 1.8T.

Right you are mate - I was seeing an 'F' in there somewhere for some reason That'll be why the newer one is greener and improved.

You're probably right on the first bit fella, real world MPG would be similar. I still think it would be better, but only by single figures for urban MPG.

The new A4 facelift is meant to do a combined 50mpg in their 1.8 TSI apparently. They keep getting more frugal which is what attracted me to them to avoid the diesels, but I agree a diesel would probably be the better buy as things stand
