Mk6 high beam DRL's on MK5
« on: October 27, 2011, 01:43:10 pm »
Hi

been searching around but came up light on how to make the highbeam H7's glow at low intensity as DRL's.  I've worked out i dont think its possible without modification.  Anyone know if a newer convenience unit (from a mk6) would allow this function to be selected??

thanks fellas

Already asked that question a few weeks back with no replies. :sad1:

There is a thing on the VW website about adding DRLs to older VWs, but it does state that it just turns the normal lights on, leading me to think that the mk6 style isn't possible.

The MK6 Golf uses a twin filament bulb: H15 for its DRL and High Beam.

To use this would also require modifying the existing bulb holder and additional wiring.

I seem to recall reading a post saying that you can have a Vagcom modification which runs lower voltage through main beam bulbs using them as DRL's.

Can anyone confirm if this can be done?

As far as I know you can only set indacator bulbs as DRL's  on halogen headlights and xenons. I will have a look next time i hook car up to vagcom!

Foglights, not indicators, I think, which probably looks daft. My car doesn't have fogs, so the DRL option just turns on the headlamps.

Carried on looking at this and I think can safely say its not possible. There is nothing in vcds other than drls on off an use fogs as drls

I didn't know the mk6 has twin filaments but as it does it kinda kills off any idea of changing the convenience unit to allow partial lighting of the high beam h7 which I was hoping for!

Not sure if using fogs as drls is even legal in this country.

It'll make you look like a nob! :signLOL:

I have the US style DRL option ticked, which is front only, but the lights go off when you put the handbrake on. Will get round to changing it one day!
