Minor Service & 'Free' health check
« on: August 02, 2011, 06:15:37 pm »
Afternoon.

Picked the car up from its service at the dealers this afternoon. Paid £129 for the fixed price minor service. Inlcuded is the health check which threw up a few faults.

I spoke with the service advisor who ran threw the problems. He gave me the print out and the following quotes for work required.

Rear near side coil spring broken - £182 (single spring)
Rear side outer CV boot split/ripped - £148
Intercooler seals leaking, 4 x turbo hose seals leaking, seals on hose at inner cooler - £79

So £420 for the work. My knowledge of car mechanics is minimal so wondered what those more in the know thought of the quotes? Looking online the springs are £40-50 the pair so couple hours labour on one spring?? CV boot i thought were pretty cheap, so again labour charge of 2 hours??

I also told him that the car appears to be lowered by previous owner. He said the technician made no mention of that in the report so I queried that i would more than likely need two springs replaced, he agreed and said £364 for the pair!

The car is a 2004(54) 2.0 GTTDI

Cheers

Murray

I find the dealers servicing costs pretty reasonable but repair work exterminate.  Take it to an indy for the work to be done.

I had same, went in for coilpacks to be replaced came back with £400 quoted for drivershaft gaiter and rear shock.
My mechanic is doing it all for £107.

Sometimes they make things out to be worse as well. Trying to get me to pay for a new tyres when still got 3mm tread on :|

He tried the tyre one with me for two new rears at 3.5mm also featured were wipers not adequately clearing screen, air con needing service and the best of all a 'plain numberplate' (no makers stamp!)

As for the springs i'd prefer it to go back to standard ride hight so springs aint an issue. Never really found a decent indy garage that i have been happy with (Edinburgh)

Hey, I'm from Edinburgh and have a 2004 (54 plate) GT TDI also. Freaky much?  :scared: I have found a fairly good garage (altho prices are a bit of a premium) out towards Loanhead. http://autohausedinburgh.co.uk/ if you are interested. they are VAG specialist too.  :happy2:

2 x rear coil spring - £364
Rear side outer CV boot split/ripped - £148
Intercooler seals leaking, 4 x turbo hose seals leaking, seals on hose at inner cooler - £79

Called for a quote from Witherspoon Volkswagen based at Bankhead in Edinburgh. They are a VW approved repair and service centre:

2 x rear coil spring - £205
Rear side outer CV boot split/ripped - £90
Intercooler seals leaking, 4 x turbo hose seals leaking, seals on hose at inner cooler - £79

£591 quoted from Western VW dealer v £374 from Witherspoon VW

Witherspoon originally quoted £99 for hoses but agreed to price match no problem. Good service on the phone and car is booked in for Friday, will report back with my thoughts when the work has been completed.

I'm with the general agreement above, dealers fixed price servicing is very good but repair prices are well over the top, VW wanted £130 to supply and fit rear brake pads,
I paid £22 for some Mintex rear pads and £20 for fitting at Formula 1 autocentre, Grand saving of £88 and still never got my hands dirty.

£20 for fitting? I wouldn't even fit rear pads for that  :popcornsoda:
