fourth year costs.........!!
« on: March 19, 2009, 07:51:40 am »
All

This year I'm reckoning for the following.

1. Main service
2. Dsg service
3. Cam belt change
4. Brake fluid change
5. A/C service

Had quotes of circa £850 the lot. Should I seek an independent vw specialist for all but the dsg and main service?  I'm waiting on seat quoting me too, not sure of the wisdom but don't like getting stuffed by main dealers, any advice?

I'm told 4 years. Not sure miles, I'm only at 34000. Seems ridiculous. I thought 60k it would be required but at 40k??? Jeez.

Dunoo whether to split the work up really, but I guess I'm just putting off the inevitable and of course will need 2 visits to a garage.

Will search for a good vw Indy in Glasgow to do the cambelt. Still want dealer stamps for the service, why? Fook knows. I plan to keep her a good while yet since resale values are half way round the u bend.

There's a thread about the cam belt change on uk-mkvs. A bit scary that the car needs the change so early in its life, especially as the cost to change the darn thing is so high.
The original poster in the thread on t'other forum does raise a good point really. When he bought the car it was on the assumption that the belt wouldn't need changing until about 120k miles and I don't seem to recall there being any time limit on it. Now VW have suddenly changed their policy and state 4 years. There must be a reason for this and it's funny how it happens to be a year out of warranty. Is this a stealth thing from VW so that if the cam belt goes and takes the engine with it VW won't have to pay out any 'goodwill' claims as a)not many people are aware of the policy change and b)many of those that are aware would be put off having it done due to the very high cost.

Guess what? Yep my car has just turned four!!!

Just outta curiosity, how does one know about these policy changes? Do we ever get letters?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I believe that some people get letters from their dealers. I'm the 3rd owner, my main dealer will no doubt be sending a letter or noting it at the next service. Anyone know a good indy around Glasgow? £411 I've been quoted by Verve VW in Glasgow  :surprised:

VW quoted me £295 all in.  That doesn't include the water pump,  which should really be changed as well.  So I am having it changed a week on monday for £295 plus the VAT but with the water pump as well.  Having the work done at Awesome.

1. Main service
2. Dsg service
3. Cam belt change
4. Brake fluid change
5. A/C service

Ouch.

....Make sure you get the whole cambelt kit with rollers etc! Also, change your water pump at the same time as it's common for them to throw a wobbly soon after a cambelt change. Not doing so could potentially be expensive.

Fuel filter change is also a good idea.

Cam belt is recommended change every 80k and for best practice change water pump at some time.
DSG fluid change should be done every 40k miles (or earlier) and is essential.
Brakes/Oil et cetera as you like.
I've had my car 4 years (54 plate) and not done an AC service but AC still is pleasantly cool/warm.
