Thanx for the reply Stevie, as for the topping up, what is the correct level, do you fill untill it flows from the fill port or something???

Interested also. Easy enough job? Want to top up as drive shaft oil seal has been leaking.
Will top it up, get it fixed pay day and then fresh oil to gimme something to do one weekend.

Havnt done it before so cant come across with an idiot guide yet. Cant see it being difficult, similar to an engine oil change with the plug in and out, run it then top it up. Stevie.

I'm sure i read somewhere about putting so much oil in, running it up, then topping it up but can't remember where I read it

Have you changed your gearbox oil yet Gaz? Changed mine just now, drain plug and fill plug (30nm), just over 2.3ltrs? Bloody hell it was really sh*tty oil that came out and full of metal shavings. Nice and clean now. Stevie.

Not an expert but i would say so and i think they hold a lot more oil than a manual. Stevie.

You need to keep filling it up until it starts to drip out.

Nope. Any advice on when to change it, type of oil etc?

Every 4 years or 40k miles.  Use only genuine fluid from the stealers.  Transmission fluids are a nightmare to get right otherwise.

Transmission oil goes 'off' in a very different way to engine oil, and most manual transmissions dont have a filter either, so all the brass filings from the synchro rings just keep building up and making more of a soup.

Dammit. I've missed out - had 4th year service in December. Is it something worth getting the stealers to do?

How are your gear shifts?

Gearbox oil isn't really critical - it is more to do with smoother shifts, especially in cold weather on start up, and to help prevent sloppy shifting much later in the boxes life.

Probably be perfectly OK to wait until your next routine service.

Gearbox oils, and rear axle oils MUST be drained when hot, ideally after a good spanking - so when you do get round to getting it done, state you want the oil drained the moment you leave it at the stealers.
