K04 conversion on BWA engine power figures ????
« on: August 16, 2011, 10:53:47 pm »
Hi guys, i have now sourced all parts necessary to do a k04 conversion on my gti bwa engine. Im currently running stage 2+ on my k03. I am running giac software. I have been told that i can expect around 340-350bhp. Do any of you know how true this is and if so would i need to uprate internals as i know these engines arent as strong as the s3-ed30 engines. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Gaz

Check in the JKM RR day thread in the Show, Events and Meets forum as one guy had this conversion done using revo software on his octavia.

Have checked it out but doesn't really answer the question of reliability and what sort of limit the Bwa engine is at.

Your rods are the weakest point but as long as you constantly don't use 5th and 6th gear at full throttle at low revs you should be fine as it's the torque not the hp on a ko4 that may be the issue on your engine.

that's quite low on torque, on my axx i've been above 450nm since going K04. What exhaust solution are you running??

Over the top mod list ;o)

The BWA engine can certainly handle a heck of a lot more than the stock set up throws at it. I would agree with Bacillus that the rods would be the 'weak' point but, even then, may only be a problem if the engine is abused further as he says (or nitrous thrown in to the equation).  In fact, there is an argument that a Stage 2+ on a K03 is pushing the engine/turbo to the limits more than a K04.

Also, I have found that everyday driving is a very tame experience on a K04 even when compared to the K03 due to it being more laggy. The K03 power would come in routinely and give the car a 'kick'. The K04 is more of a 'Jeckyl and Hyde' beast - 'normal' driving and the turbo keeps itself quite contained...hold on for the revs (or drop down a gear and floor it) and its woohoo time   !  Not sure if this is bizarre logic on my part but the point is that the K04 may not be so prone to giving the 'power kicks' in everyday use which might be beneficial in the long term. Of course that theory may be garbage and is certainly garbage if you really use that K04....and why wouldn't you?

I have only heard of one problem to my knowledge on a K04 conversion and that was a broken piston ring I believe on VRS_Harry's Octavia over on Briskoda.net. However, I think Harry is known for, err, getting the most out of his car

I think that's an understatement.
He's now running an Ed30 bottom end with no problems.

JKM done my KO4 conversion. I have done around 50k on it since , total 98k and engine still ok with no problems. Have to say i didn't really notice any difference with every day driving vs ko3 2+. On my car the Ko4 wasn't slower or faster on low rpms but whej you drop a gear  :driver:
2008 Octavia vRS K04'd , Forge twintercooler, Evoms, Autotech uprated pump, full Milltek exhaust 324bhp on JKM's rollers ;-)

Mickey 32. Have you had the car dyno'd and if so what sort of figures did it put down cheers. I have been told the car would be safe running around the 350bhp mark and 340ftlb of torque. Any truth in this?
