Thought I’d do a potted history of my love and involvement with Wolfsbergs finest.

Anyone who’s seen my “Rocco” thread will know my wife had a narrow escape when it was written off.
Some of her compensation went towards providing us with a replacement car and helped me realise a long standing dream.
I was also a very early member of the original GTi Drivers Club and went to the very first GTi International at Knebworth.

This is the start of the obsession.

I don’t remember the cost of the car back in 1987 but I think it was just over a year old and had 17k on the clock.

I spent about £400 at Gti Engineering at Silverstone on a full Jetex Stainless Exhaust, a rolling road tune and a free flow K&N Filter.
This was a K Jetronic car and the meaning of that would become apparent when I traded up  :ashamed:

The Alloys were “MiM’s” as I wasn’t keen to lash out on BBS at the time. The car came on 15” Steelies.

I kept the car for just over 2 years until I was lured away by the red one seen in the pic at the bottom.
Unfortunately “PAV” was written off a few years ago. It had stayed relatively local and had a heavy coming together
with a tree. … sniff…..

Up next …..  Digifant ..

OK on to my next baby.
I px'd the Atlas Grey Mk2 for this after a couple of years. Digifant Injection proved to be a lot less tweakable and was therefore not as good a drive. The grey car had only done 37k.. I must have been mad  :rolleye:

Its ok there are some Mk5's coming soon. Sorry if Iv'e hogged the threads with old stuff.  :embarrassed:
Anyone know why my pics have got jaggies? Is it because Iv'e resized to 900 pixels wide?

I kept the wheels from the 1st car. As someone said further up, the cars do look high but back in 1989 there wasn't
that much modding going on. RR would have hated it.

Mk1 up next

Ok Mk 1 Now.

The Red Mk2 had to go when I started my own business back in 1993. It was a shame as I'd been
lusting after a GTi for so many years and had been the proud owner of 2 corkers. Anyway, needs must
and I needed the capitol.

I guess it did have its compensations......

This had done 57k when I got it and I had it for a few years before it was stolen from the public car
park where I left it every day   I actually stood in the space where I'd left the car that morning
and just kept looking around, convinced I'd put it somewhere different. Its such a strange feeling.
To make matters worse the scumbags were caught on CCTV but were never found.

It was a 1.8 and the interior was mint. Unfortunatley I have no pics.

I so wish I still had this in its unmolested condition. Originals fetch some crazy money these days.

Next episode.... Back to a rare Mk2.

I guess the only thing that sets this Mk2 apart from any other is the colour.
Llahsa Green had been used for a few years on the Mk1’s and it was unusual
To find a Mk2 in the same colour. This was completely by chance as when I
Rang the guy about going to look at it he just said it was green and I assumed
It would be “Fern”. After a few trips to Gti International when it was at TRL
I realised it was pretty rare. There were over 6000 Gti’s at the event in 1995 and
like a sad muppet I walked the entire car park in search of another. I found 2 and
the same 2 again the following year. I got talking to one of the owners and he told
me that there were only 16 of them ordered in that colour from a dealer up north somewhere.
Not sure if its true but it does seem feasible. They had the interior trimmed in green and black
too just like the Mk1’s had it matching. Both the other 2 cars were “MLN” suffix too.

The first shots are of the car soon after I got it home, its still on it’s Pirelli Wheels and had
The then obligatory eyebrow spoiler. The drivers side door was dog ruff and didn’t have
The silver stripe so there’s no pics of that side. Yeah, I know, bloody snob.

The Wheels were added after a trip to Gti Int. one year. They were 17’s and as big as it got back then.

This profile picture holds a little secret and I’m embarrassed to say that my mate was lying
In the boot for this shot to make the rear look lower.

There now followed a VW sabbatical of 5 years where I succumbed to the nagging depression of turning 40. Look away now as it gets ugly…. I bought a SAAB 9000 saloon As I obviously thought my life was just about over. I drove it for 8 months with a nodding dog and a Panama hat on the rear parcel shelf in an attempt to inject some humour into my senseless predicament. I then went all out and followed the SAAB with 2 Impreza Turbo’s. a wagon and a classic saloon. The contrast was immense and it was then I learnt what driving fast on a B road was all about. The classic Scooby saloon still stands out as one of my most amazing cars, they are just sooo hard to unstick. I have pics of the Japanese tin boxes if anyone really wants to see em.

Here comes 2003 and my return to German solidity….. Oooh… “R”
