GT TDI - Compared to GTI
« on: August 25, 2011, 10:47:52 am »
I don't think I can push to a GTI, due to long term costs, but those that own them whats the avareage running costs of a GTI?

MPG -
Tax -
Ins Group -

I know I should go for a GT TDI (sensible) but the specs on GTI's seem far superior.

Looking a TDI's with a mileage of 70k plus really doesn't put me off, as my last one was like a tank (loved it) with a petrol, the higher mileage does worry me, as diesel tends to be more bullet proof. COuld GTI owners advise, should I aim around 40k 50k tops?

The two simply aren't the same, you buy one for one set of reasons and the other for almost an entirely different set of reasons.

It's more about can I justify a GTI?

I do or can do a lot of mileage......head and heart situation.

One hand I know I should get the diesel....
but looking about thhe GTI is sooooo more appealing. I can get more of what I want (spec wise) but is it just going to cost me a lot more to keep it. I always like to have a service once a year. Not practical I understand, but my previous car 6 years old (from new) managed 401,000 miles before it died, due to being well maintained.

not less than 20k year.

:surprised: I have just looked on parkers @ insurance groups, and it's claiming the following? surely this is not right?

2005 1.9 GT TDI (150ps) 5 door - Ins group 27
2005 2.0 GTI 5 door - ins group 21

If you can afford the costs get the GTi, such a joy to drive, puts a smile on my face every time - For me life's too short to be driving a motor just because it saved me a few bob over the space of the year if that few bob isn't then going towards something necessary for the family

I would get the GTI. Keep it for as long as you can until you can't afford it anymore (thats what I'm doing with mine)

i have just got a mk5 golf gt tdi 140, it pulls well considering its only 140 bhp. Its a great car to drive. Im sure its got nothing on the gti but when im getting 45 mpg and driving like a nutter ... haha cant complain. If you got a gt tdi 170 u can sit it at 200 bhp easily and thats the same as a standard gti. :driver:

MPG is quite difficult to pin down on the GTI - it very much depends how / where its driven.

For example I've just moved from a place where I did a 20 minute mostly urban commute with about 5 mins of high speed dual carriageway.  7 miles each way.  Fuel bill was about £30-35 a week.  Little bit of shuffling to the shops too.

I now live in the country where I have a 22 mile commute each way on a mix of B roads and quiet A roads.  Tend to sit at about 50-60 ish most of the time.  I now hit 37 mpg without trying to hard vs the 22-25 mpg I got when driving round town.  Despite my mileage trippling I'm (so far) seeing it cost me about £10 a week more.  Which is a relief as I thought an oil burner might be on the cards  :signLOL:

If you drive with a lead foot or lots of stop start traffic MPG is not going to be your friend.  I'm always surprised how economical the GTI can be if you keep to a steady and reasonable speed.

You could buy an mk2 Octavia vRS - same engine/brakes/suspension as the GTi on a MK5 platform, very well appointed inside with lots of available toys, cheaper to insure.............  :popcornsoda:

His: MK2 Black Magic Skoda Octavia vRS Estate
Hers: MK5 Graphite Blue Pearl VW Golf GT140 -
