« on: March 28, 2009, 11:29:58 pm »
guys
am getting the girlf an ipod for her b/day, and want info on what i need for the car.
its got 6cd in arm and rcd300 in dash (non mp3), idealy i just want to unplug the 6cd and add a cable, do i need to add the cable to 6cd end or into rcd300, also its not highline so am not going to get any info in the display. so its a case of looking at the display of ipod, so do i get a mount for it (not keen on that) i was just going to rest it in the armrest or the cup holder.
anybody done this route, any info/cable advice/prices/part numbers/mount options, very welcome
cheers guys

Mate - be careful. The 4th gen ipod nano isn't compatible with much.

It works with the ipod connector I got with the RCD500 6-cd changer. But it wasn't compatible with any of the in-car chargers from halfrauds. Apparently, because apple dropped firewire support, the ipod nano will only charge with USB.

idealy i just want to unplug the 6cd and add a cable
You can do this but the cable is either £50 or £150 from VW.

do i need to add the cable to 6cd end or into rcd300
The stereo has one port at the back. You can plug one of three cables - one that connects to the CD changer, one that connects to an ipod or one that connects to a USB device. You cannot have all three cables at once. If you're going for ipod connection, you will lose the ability to use the cd autochanger.

so its a case of looking at the display of ipod, so do i get a mount for it (not keen on that) i was just going to rest it in the armrest or the cup holder.
As far as I'm aware, the VW ipod cable doesn't transfer any data about the title/artist etc. I remember someone saying that you can get an aftermarket cable that will display such things but may cause problems with the stereo.

oh or do i just get one of them FM transmitters

I had one of those FM transmitters - borrowed a mates one. It was crap. Pirate radio stations interfered with the signal, the sound quality was crap and I sometimes had to hold the transmitter closer to the aerial. Don't waste money on an FM transmitter.

would it help if i had a RCD300 with the wording MP3 on it, above the cd slot
Don't know is the simplest answer. I have the RCD500 with is like the 300 but holds 6 non-mp3) cds. I have the ipod nano connector. Like I said in my last post, it works with the 4th gen ipod nano.

Billy,

If your not bothered about the title/artist display (which is only available if you have highline) with the standard RC300 or the ability to the charge the iPod from the same cable then one of these is the best bet IMHO: -

If means you can just plug the iPod straight in and control the track select from the iPod itself.
