Just put a deposit on an ED30...what can i expect guys lol
« on: August 30, 2011, 11:54:31 am »
Well ive done the whole range of cars; evo 9, honda fd2 (5 door import) mkv r32, s2000 etc etc and now im moving to an Ed30

Put the deposit on one yesterday, manual, black, 40k miles, 3 door. Was impressed at how torquey they are compared to the r32 i had.

My question is how much fun can i expect to get out of one....bearing in mind im hoping to tune it up to stage 3 in the very near future

How much fun and how fast is a stage 3 Ed30....come on guys whet my appetite here while i wait for friday to go and collect my ED30 lol

It'll be good enough to break traction on the front wheels

Looking at your automotive history you aren't adverse to buying V-Power which is good, you'll be buying plenty of that.

So you going bigbturbo on it, as that's what stage 3 entails. They're great cars, mines running S2+ like many on here. Shed loads of mid range torque. Where are you based?

@ VRSTU unfortunately im on first name terms with the owner of my local v-power/high octane garage  lol

Actually guys i made a typo there im actually going for Stage 2+...think this should be good for 330-340bhp, and running pretty reliable?

Im just hoping Stage 2+ will have enough ooomph to keep me interested because ive changed cars so many times in the last year my bank manager has me ready for the high jump lol Though in saying that i found my mkv r32 a fantastic car and by all accounts a tuned ED30 is an altogether more serious beast so it should be fun!! lol

@DOMT...im from Northern Ireland mate, but dont hold that against me lol

Don't hold that against you at all! Was thinking that there may be someone close to you who can take you out in a 2+ car. I've done 50k on s2+ without any engine issues at all. Look after it and it will look after you. Yes, your power figures are about right, good old dyno lottery . .

I've had a S2000 in the past and the torque from a tuned ed30 will put those to sleep! I also tried an R32 before this! Brilliant sound, as we all know, but not quite the go I'd expected coming from a 3L Z4 that is was replacing! Don't bother with superchips like I did! I feel mine should be quicker than it is with the mods ove got! Saying that you will love the car! I used to change alll the time but fell in love with this and I've now had it 2.5 years!

I had my Mk5 R32 for 2 years and did lots to the handling, but kept the engine standard...

With my Edition all i've done is stage 1 Revo which is awesome, but the car does struggle with traction compared to the R32 being only FWD and the brakes are shocking compared to the R32 too... so watch out for them and will need upgrading if upping the power...

But enjoy, they are nice cars...

Thats what ive been looking to hear mate...Id say the ED30 will be the best all rounder ill ever have owned...speed and power similiarish to the evo 9 (was about 420bhp), good handling, build quality, hopefully reliable etc Only real down side is the looks are very 'safe' but that could be a good thing also...nice and discreet and sophisticated. Considered an audi s3...but they were much to boring in my opinion. Lovely interior, but the exterior appearance was just to stale for my liking!

Just hope a stage 2+ ed30 is really as fun and as serious a car as they say it is as i was going to go for another evo 9 or an e46 m3 and by all accounts a well tuned ed30 will nail an m3...so things seem promising....cant wait until friday now lol

At Stage 2+ you should be looking at around 350bhp - even on the more reserved dyno's, so well over 300whp. Torque is a great bonus with the ED30 you can expect anything from 350-400+lbft depending on how much you like the stuff

They are definitely faster than an E46 M3....here's a post I saved from a long time ago made by a chap who had an E46 M3CSL.

"Again it was a pleasure to meet you John, a true gent . and the GTI of yours is a sleeper in the true sense !

I was nearly 98% sure what my next car was going to be, either a Focus RS or a 996 GT2. I must have gone through at least 3 months of going back and forth on the decision, cheers John for making it harder now !!

John kindly took me for a spin(more like a lap of the nurburgring) in his crazy GTI as I wanted to see what a well modded GTI is like.

I was adamant I would not get a GTI again, ever.

Then what happens you meet John (Hurdy) (top bloke btw ) and he takes you for a drive and you come back with neck ache from the G achieved in cornering and swearing like a sailor

Forgot how good an mk5 GTI is and never realised how crazy a modded one was. I totally forgot the composure, the quality and the shifts of the DSG; it really is the total package!

Its unbelievably, mind numbingly, arse twitchingly, hand grabbing the grab handle, foot hitting the imaginary brake pedal RAPID as a road tool, I imagine as a track car too! The way those brakes shed of speed is crazy, I’ve got an enlarged AP Racing 6 pot on the CSL running pagid rs29's and the Tar-ox BBK were as good if not better! !

John was kind enough to take me on a drive round one of my local country lanes, which I know like the back of my hand.

Keep in mind he has not ever seen this road, the rate at which this road was dispatched was utterly gob smacking for a FWD 5 door car. I mean, I take a CSL and a M5 around these roads at least once a week and I like to think I know how to drive on that road, but damn, Johns GTI was reaching near enough the same speed with no fuss and with iron fisted control, no body roll, no wasted power and the worst bit is with a diff I think it would have been faster! The suspension just soaked up the abuse, its one very very good set-up road car! Also keep in mind that the GTI has a 2 litre 4pot turbo FSI and the other cars have a 5litre V10 and a 3.2 I6 and you seriously begin to wonder what the power in the M cars is doing! What suprised me the most is that it was riding as well if not better than a stock car, no harshness, no excessive noise, you wouldn't even know what lurked underneath was a monster, a proper sleeper!

Considering it cost a 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of the other cars, yet its just as fast is basically crazy

because it certainly is not half /third of the car!

Most BMW, Porsche or Audi drivers would have a hard time believing that a GTI is quicker in a straight line or round corners but I’m telling you guys it FU$%ING IS!

I reckon car mags really should test a GTI ed30 with a few mods etc, remap, DSG and LSD vs the Focus RS, both cost the same money, both about the same power, but which one would be the better everyday car? ?

Yes that old bug "but the GTI is modded, mod the Focus the same and the Focus would win" but the Focus costs more! A GTi Ed30 can be had for 17K, 3 K mods, that is still 20k! It would be nice to see which one really is the better car. I for one would be very interested to know!

The only thing magazines/media don't seem to realise is the GTI takes time to appreciate, like a good Cognac. Just sitting in John’s car brought back memories of how great a car the mk5 GTI is.

Now I’m totally stuck as to what car to get now, cheers John it only took me 3 months to decide between the Focus or the GT2! Now I have thoughts of a GTI in my head, not again!! I tell you my decision in another 3 months!!! LOL

Once again great meeting you John and thank you for that drive which made me "sh*t in my pants " You certainly know how to drive."

Didn't like it then John?

Moglie, you'll love the Ed30 mate. Great sensible car when you want it to be, but chuck a few mods at it and it would keep your old Evo pretty worried once rolling..
All I had on my Ed30 was a TBE, Intake, Fuel pump and software (Stage 2+) and it would do high 4's 0-60, 10 flat 0-100 and 12.7 @ 114mph @ Pod (DSG). All that and when I was using it for work it would return high 30's mpg on a run and could take the dog in the back, do the shopping and sit in comfort when I was driving it day to day.. I do miss it for all that, I have to say..  :sad1:
Oh and it did 80,000 trouble free miles whilst modded in different stages too..
