Good evening everybody!

I'm looking for a bit of guidance with the installation of my RNS510, I received the unit yesterday and installed it last night, after some testing today I have encountered a few issues I need help with.

The first issue I have is GPS reception, When I first turned the unit on it thought it was in Germany, but that quickly corrected itself, I was testing the unit on the way home this afternoon and it could only located around 4 out 9 Satellites for the first 7 minuets of the Journey, it had my location on the map but was about 500 yards out and put me a middle of a field.

I have installed my GPS receiver in the location on the right shown in the picture below, I am thinking of moving it higher up into the Edition 30 air vent, but has a quick question is there anyway to calibrate the GPS receiver on the RNS510?



Another issue which could be causing signal problems is that the GPS reviever came with alot of spare cable, I have coiled it up like in the picture below



Could this be causing an induction loop due to the long length of cable coiled up? And is there anyway of making the cable shorter with cutting into it a risking damage?


The second issue is that I have a Connects2 aftermarket AUX adapter which I fitted to my old RCD300, you can see the exact product below in the link its the CTVVGX004

As you know the RNS510 has a slightly different pin layout on the for the CD change port on the back compared to the RCD300 and this is the port which Connect2 equipment uses, has anybody managed to change the pinout on the connection supplied with the Connects2 adapter so it works with the RNS510?

I like to put the GPS Beetle under the dash behind the dash insert (clocks).  Also make sure it's the correct way up, some people think the magnet underneath is really useful, it is if you want the Beetle on the outside of your roof  :evilgrin:

I have taken out the GPS receiver from its old location and have now placed it just inside the air vent, see below. I'm guessing I have put it the correct way up??

I will be testing it on the run to work to see how many Sat's I pick up and hope it doesn't put me in a middle of a field again!  :fighting:

Where you have it now probably isn't going to do much for you.  You need the top (with the GPS Logo) facing the sky.

I have taken the Connect2 Aux connector cable out of the car now and have been checking the PINOUT of the cable and also comparing the RNS510 against the RCD300, as you can see from the photos below I have drawn both connectors next to each other and then compared the colour of each wire against the PIN layout.

The Connect2 Aux connector emulates being an external CD changer, and comparing the PINOUT of both units the only changes in terms of where the Connect2 Aux cable connects onto on the block are PINS 2 and 3 and how the AUX ground and the CD ground have changed locations.

I have changed these two PIN connections on the Connects2 AUX cable and I am still getting bad static and low sound/quality of music coming from the RNS510.

The next step that I am trying is the change over the Grey and White cable from the CD R PIN and CD L pin to the AUX R and AUX L as I believe that the RNS510 does not like the Connect2 Aux equipment emulating a CD changer and is looking for a dedicated AUX input. I will be testing it tomorrow hopefully  :innocent:

Any views or comments on my issue would be appreciated  :happy2:

When fitting to a 2007 Model Year Octavia fitted with the Aux Input Socket you will probably experience a loud buzzing interference when using the CD changer. I have traced this down to a variation in the vehicle wiring in the Blue 12 pin Multipin Plug Connection to allow for the Aux Input Socket.

Pre 2007 MY Octavia wiring is as follows -

Pin 1 - Not connected
Pin 2 - CD changer, left and right channel, earth
Pin 3 - Not connected
Pin 4 - CD changer, voltage supply, terminal 30
Pin 5 - Not connected
Pin 6 - CD changer, DATA OUT
Pin 7 - Not connected
Pin 8 - CD changer, left channel, CD/L
Pin 9 - CD changer, right channel, CD/R
Pin 10 - CD changer, control signal
Pin 11 - CD changer, DATA IN
Pin 12 - CD changer, CLOCK

2007 MY Onwards Octavia wiring is as follows -

Pin 1 - Aux in left
Pin 2 - Aux in earth
Pin 3 - CD changer, left and right channel, earth
Pin 4 - CD changer, voltage supply, terminal 30
Pin 5 - Not connected
Pin 6 - CD changer, DATA OUT
Pin 7 - Aux in right
Pin 8 - CD changer, left channel, CD/L
Pin 9 - CD changer, right channel, CD/R
Pin 10 - CD changer, control signal
Pin 11 - CD changer, DATA IN
Pin 12 - CD changer, CLOCK

From this you will see that Skoda have connected the Aux In Socket audio to Pin 1 and Pin 7 as well as a ground to Pin 2.

Pre 2007 MY cars had the CD Changer ground connected to Pin 2 but in post 2007 MY cars this has been moved to Pin 3 to make way for the Aux In Socket ground on Pin 2.

Pin 3 on the MFD2 does not give a satisfactory ground route to the CD Changer. To cure this it is necessary to remove the Aux In Socket ground (Brown) from the Blue Multipin Plug Connection Pin 2 and insert the CD Changer ground (Black).

If you wish to retain the function of the Aux In Socket you can amend the wiring as follows - Thanks to RossM for the info.

You'll need to purchase a connector -

12 Pin Green Flat Contact Housing (Plug) Radio/Telephone Connection - 3B7 035 447 B - £3.38

The three wires from the Aux In Socket are -

Yellow - Pin 1 - Aux In Right

Green - Pin 7 - Aux In Left

Brown - Pin 2 - Aux In Ground

Remove these from the Blue connector and insert them into the new Green connector in the following positions -

Yellow - Pin 1 - EA-R

Green - Pin 7 - EA-L

Brown - Pin 2 - EA-G

You should now have Aux Audio from your MFD2. You may need to check the setup menu to ensure it is enabled.

That's where I have mine and I don't have issues, except once in a blue moon when it does go awry before correcting itself.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Im not sure about the sound Pack, I have a Edition 30 3 door with about 3 speakers in each front door card and im not sure how many in the back, and no I havent coded in the nav yet will hopefully be getting it done next Monday.

So without the nav coded in the car wont be sending the dead reckoning information from the ECU to tell the nav speed information it uses this the compass in the RNS and the sat positioning to determine/calculate its position (so that when you go in a tunnel etc it can track where you are) with the gps puck and loss of dead reckoning info my RNS was always all over the place.

With the puck in the new place and with the nav coded in you will see a big improvement in accuracy  :happy2:

Ahhh that makes sense, I thought the coding only effected the RNS unit working with the highline display, didnt realise it had a impact on the Sat Nav working!

When I was testing it this morning It tracked me perfectly for about 80% of the Journey and even changed my route due to traffic, but the Sattilite count was only 1 out of 10 with No Fix  :scared:

The coding will tell the gateway that it needs to send information to and from the RNS.  When I have used the nav without the infotainment communicating with the car you can see how often the gps updates the position as it lumps along the map. 

GPS is also very susceptible to not working well in built up areas or forests as the gps signal is very weak (it comes all the way from space) hence why you need to get it as near to the top of the dash as you can and have it facing the right way as carl said. 

I have now fixed a sharkfin on the rear of my car and I now see 9 out of 10 or 11 satellites but this can still drop down in areas without a clear view of the sky to 4 or 5.
