Dials?
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:01:38 pm »
Question........below are two tyes. Standard and the so called GTI/R32 style with deep dials and nice surrounds. Is this just a face plate? i.e if you have a highline unit which looks like pic 1....can you keep it and put the surround R32 style over the standard clocks?

I would say they are completely different clusters, besides that they will be a sealed unit and I certainly wouldn't consider breakin that seal to change the dial surrounds, any dust or muck in there and they will look carp.

Mmm know whay your saying, would be a fiddly job.

Just wondered if anyone had done this? ££ to replace a highline to a r32 style highline just for a look....but do have an appeal about them

They definitely look sexier :happy2:

My old man has a TDI and before I got my GTI I thought the dials looked nice. Then got my GTI and after driving his TDI again I was thinking damn those dials look plain and unsexy

pic 1 is midline and has been done by someone on the forum.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Darren

Whats the Offer??

I have a 1.9D very basic Golf, The cluster looks like the Pic 1 above, The top half of the centre display doesn't do anything, the lower section just has normal old fashioned 8 digit lettering if that makes sense?

Can the clocks be upgraded to the higher end ones??

Clock can be upgraded buddy, believe you need to budgets £150-£200 give or take.

You need to find the right clocks to match your car then you need some one to plug the car in and code it. Search replacing highline or replacing clocks there is a full thread on it.

I can only give you the basics.....no expert, but thats it in a nut shell.

I think what you were trying to say in the original post is can you get away with fitting the GTI faceplate on to a standard highline cluster?  If I'm right then I think you will be able too, but you will need to get hold of the face plate the backing plate and the dials and needles, you would also need to change the cluster bits to give you things like the lit needles without the lights on as per GTI/R32.

My build thread and cluster destruction might help you out, you would also need the plastic backing for a highline cluster or you would need to dremel the plastic divide that you have on a midline cluster out of the way.

Basically.....I have a std highline, would like the look of the GTI highline.

As per your comment.......(if I have this correct) I would need
- Front plate
- Back plate
- Dials
- Needles

?

you would need the whole front piece from a GTI or R32 clock, which is made up of the front part that you see a rear part that is midline or highline specific plus all the glass panels, plus you would need the GTI needles and the dial cards for all 4 dials rpm speedo fuel and water temp.

You would basically be better off buying a broken cluster in good cosmetic condition and stripping and moving across, I have never done this but I suspect its as simple as that as all the impulses are electronic so the speed and rpm values arent important.

that was I assumed. I must be a basic simple cosmetic update - all the digital side on things must be the same......
