Which remap for my Pirelli?
« on: September 02, 2011, 11:34:55 am »
Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie to the forum and last week took delivery of my black '08 Pirelli with DSG.  This is my third GTi after owning a 'H plate mk 2 16 valve for years and an '07 candy white mk 5 from new.  After having the candy white GTi for two years, I went to a 335i coupe, a 2.0T TT, a 2.0T A5 coupe and am now gladly back in a GTi.

The Pirelli is fully loaded with RNS510, bluetooth, MFW, folding mirrors, cruise etc.... but there are still some mods I'd like to do starting off with a remap. :driver:

Having trawled through the very informative forum and then on several company websites, I've narrowed my remapping options down to Shark Performance, Revo or Blue Fin.

In terms of performance mods the most I want to do is get a remap, a performance exhaust and an induction kit so which remap do you think is best for the KO4 engine?  Just like everyone, I want the biggest BHP/torque gains possible for the money, but more important than outright pace for me is for the car to feel very smooth and driveable in town, with the remap being unnoticable unless you put your foot down.  Reliability is also key and I wouldn't want to be running around in a car with any warning lights on particularily as it's my only car and my daily driver.

Shark Performance are charging £449 for the map and claim 300bhp.  If I went with Shark I'd go down to their premises to get them to set the car up.  Bluefin is £462 delivered and claim 287bhp.  Revo (fitted via JKM) costs £660 (including K&N Panel filter and a new diverter valve) and the claim is 279bhp.

The cost difference between the three isn't a problem, I want the map that is the most drivable and reliable whilst still offering significant performance gains over the standard car.  Your thoughts and experiences would be much appreciated.

Cheers guys!

Spencer

Revo and Shark will give similar results, with BF being slightly less. JKM just have very tight rollers.
Revo can be as progressive as you like or as aggressive as you like, depending on what settings you prefer. Shark has good results, but not sure how flexible it is with regards to how you would like the power to be delivered (sure someone will be along to clarify that).
Bluefin is as it comes, loaded on and off you go..

All three will give you a nice performance advantage over stock, that is for sure..  :driver:

Go Revo! They have been working on the TFSI engine for tears! I had Bluefin and wished I had of gone revo! Don't worry about intake and exhaust before you get a break upgeade!! The R32 stoppers are good!

Thanks for the advice guys.  I had heard that the JKM rollers were a bit stingy so was wondering if that was why the quoted BHP gains were +20bhp less than Sharks.

Does anyone know if I went for any of these remaps and then in the future got a turbo back performance exhaust and induction kit whether I'd have to pay the full cost of another remap to liberate the extra power these would give me?  i.e. would I end up paying twice for a map?

I thought that the pirelli gives a lower mapped figure becuase of the valves used in the cylinder head , i know its the same engine , but im sure i have read it somewhere?

also i wouldnt bother with the panel filter , waste of money.

My Pirelli was mapped by Wayside VW at Towcester. I believe that Richter do the remaps for them and it came with a warranty through the VW dealership. They seem to heavily advertise the remaps and a lot of the demo cars have the maps on them. I have been very pleased with mine and it is very smooth all the way to the red line. Passengers do not know it is mapped given the progressive nature. They have no doubts though when they feel the acceleration which is amazing for a Golf

That's really interesting, I've never heard VW themselves offering remaps.  Sounds promising though if it comes with warranty.  Any idea on numbers (price, BHP, torque)?

^^^ The richter map is just a Superchip's map but you pay more and don't get the Bluefin handset  :happy2:

So in your opinion of all these maps would you go Bluefin?

Having read a bit more around the forum I'm now thinking of going with either Shark Performance or Revo with STS boxes.  That way it seems you get the benefit of getting the car set up by an expert on a RR but also have the option to revert to stock or adjust the drivability of the map via the box............... oh, and they seem to offer that bit of extra power over a Bluefin

I'm also looking to get a remap for my GTI KO3. I was thinking of uprating the DV and panel filter then going for stage 1 software. What companies are best suited to KO3 units, Revo? Also is it necessary to up-rate the DV and panel filter for a stage 1 remap or can they be left stock and would this affect power gains?

Personally on the TFSI I would go Revo.

Hi Spencer,  I can highly recommend Ben and the guys at Shark performance, and if you pull your finger out and call them asap they have an excellent offer running until the 6th.  The remap for your car will be £299, or you could get an STS for an extra £150.   :happy2:

Wow, that's an amazing price!!!  I couldn't see it on their site as it's still quoting £449 for ED30/Pirelli's but I'll give them a call.  If I can get the stage 1 map and STS box for £450, we have a winner I think!  :happy2:
