EGR blank on TDI
« on: September 05, 2011, 11:25:09 pm »
Hi guys ive fab'ed a temp EGR blank at work and stuck in place of the gasket between the EGR valve and the smaller take off pipe to the side of it...the one that goes round to the back of the engine.

On testing it there is no lights on the dash and it runs nice and smooth? But is there other things I need to have done or am I in the right place???

I have a Darkside Developements EGR delete pipe in place and for the first 20-30 miles no CEL, then it came on.  I switched it off with my Shark STS, but it reared its ugly head a few miles later.  It has now been permanently removed on my stage 1 software.
If and when the CEL does come on, you can either leave it (not going to do any harm) or have your standard/remap modified to flash it out.

Cheers Pagey, last night I took the small vac pipe off and plugged it, left the other side open and it took around 80 miles for the CEL to come on, I turned it off with VCDS so just waiting for it to come back on...but will get S/C to send me a modded map with the EGR delete.

Cheers again

I believe it stops parts of the engine from building up with crud if you blank it off???? Someone with better knowledge of the system will be along shortly.

Darren's explanation is spot on really, over time crud will build up in the EGR valve reducing the diameter and with it air flow.  You don't necessarily have to fit a delete pipe, if you have the time, you can remove the EGR and leave it to soak overnight in either carb cleaner or similar.  Once clean simply refit.  However the advantage to going for a bypass is the internal diameter of the delete pipe is greater and also there are no internal obstructions.

The pictures below should illusrate this.

My OE EGR valve -

Mine had covered a little over 45k, and tbh wasn't that bad, the last picture is from a vehicle which had covered less miles.  Poor servicing, fuelling and enviroment can all play a part in how bad they can get.  Imo, for 70 quid it's a no brainer, as I noticed increase throttle response and over a couple of runs the mpg increased slightly.

Should the egr valve be cleaned every 40k odd miles?

I can't see any harm in it.  Now I have done it once I reckon I could remove/refit in 20 minutes, there is one bolt at the rear that is awkward to get to but once I figured I could use an allen key it wasn't a big deal.

Would the delete pipe be an better option to cleaning the egr valve?

Yes IMO it would, and I will be doing what Mr Pagey has done in the near future but just has a temp measure I have made my own delete plate and disconnected the vac pipe,

Big thing for me at the moment is I got an email back from S/C and they said they do not support the EGR delete on there files.

Good afternoon.

I am glad to hear that the car is now running well. Unfortunately EGR removal and deactivation is not something we support or offer with our files.

Kind Regards

Michael Howard.

So will be thinking defo going to see Dave @ PDT once the Darkside delete is in place.

I was assured by Darkside that an EGR delete was extremely unlikely to cause limp mode.
