Anyone Had any luck getting VW to Fix DSG out of warranty??
« on: September 10, 2011, 08:55:01 pm »
Hi Everyone!

Now I know this is a huge topic as Ive been looking at few threads but havent seen if anyone has managed to get VW to fix it outside of warranty....

I have just bought an 08 plate DSG with 29k Miles on it and 3 VW services the lady I bought it off had owned it from new, anyway Ive started to notice as horrible judder/shuddering (best way I can describe it is that it feels like I have put petrol in it instead on diesel but I havent) notice it more when pulling off at low speeds. From the threads ive read sounds like the ever faulty mechatronics unit.

Anyhow as its only 6 months out of warranty and not very many miles on it with full VW history im thinking of taking it to vw and trying to argue the toss of them replacing the mechatronics unit as It is clear it should have been a recall hense why VW USA did a recall and extended the warranty to ten years?

Thanks

Hi Brooko,

Don't get on here that much at the mo as my computer is out of action  :sad1:

I can't answer your question on what VW will do but your problem sounds very similar to mine and it may not be the mechatronics unit.

I have a 56 Plate ED30 with 40k miles, FVWSH etc

I bought mine from VW and began to notice similar symptoms. It is most noticable when you release the brake pedal and lightly press the accelerator. There is a small shudder that feels like the clutch is on its biting point.

Took it to VW who done some testing and have diagnosed its not the mechatronics unit but something to do with one of the clutchs (hence it feeling like its on its biting point i guess).

Just waiting for the VW warranty approval to go through.

Interestingly the VW guy said they used to get a few of these problems mainly on the higher powered DSG cars.

Just my two pence worth. Good luck buddy.

I think you should find the exact fault before  arguing with the service manager,Problems will start when you say its the mechatronics unit and the tech says something different,I think you will have some more luck if you take the friendly approach and ask if there is anything they can do as it seams very poor a VW should be problematic with such few miles and cared for by there specialist team come service time .I have just had a huge bill paid mostly by BMW  on a 3 series that was 8 months outside warrenty they paid for all the parts in excess off £1000 and asked me to pay for the labour off £199.97p as this would give me 2 yrs guarantee on the repair. It seams if they do it FOC there is no warranty .

First thing is to go in and see the service Manager and make friends and get him on side

yeah i tend to find with these things that if you've got a good relationship with your dealer they bend over backwards for you.

i drive an A3 2.0T and before that a 1.6 and i've taken them to Audi Approved Birmingham to the same service advisor every time. my 2.0T was an approved used car, on a 55 plate, and although it had a year's warranty that has now expired as well. i had a coolant leak (not the head gasket) and Audi had the car for 3 days, found the problem(s), replaced 3 parts and then delivered the car 50 miles away for me and i didn't pay a penny. they even fixed a couple of other minor things they found along the way without me asking.

the friendly approach is definitely the way to go. if that doesn't work then i'd have a low threshold for taking it up with VW UK. if they're anything like Audi UK they can light a fire under the stealer's backside if things aren't going to plan.

i have a feeling as well that you would have trading standards on your side. a car shouldn't suffer a catastrophic breakdown after 3 years, warranty or no warranty. goods not fit for purpose and all that. in any event this all starts with you going out on a test drive an demonstrating the problem to one of the service techs.

best of luck,

S.

also you can't just replace the mechatronics unit i don't think. the whole gearbox has to be changed.

I think you are 100% wrong as I have had 2 on 2 different cars.

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies!

I agree with the friendly approach which is the root I plan on going down first, I have a very good relationship with my local dealer (solihull VW) but its with the sales guys and a technician I know who works there I have to say I havent found the service dept that helpfull in the past.... I had a 07 170 GT TDI that had extended VW warranty and I was told by the lady in the extended warranty dept that the mileage was uncapped on the warranty, anyway I had one of the shocks replaced and then after I had picked the car up they called me to say that I needed to come and pay the bill as VW would not be covering it as the car had done 110k miles they when I said that I would not be paying it as they cant change the rules after Ive had the work done they threatend me with passing my debt on to debt collectors, anyway I sent an Email to the CEO of VW and his secretary called me up the next day to say the charge had been dropped as VW was in the wrong. Anyway I dont think the service manager will remember me and he did call me up after to apologise and advise that he was only going by what VW warranty was advising him so hopefully no hard feelings there...

Anyway back to the issue I am going to take it to the VW specialist next door (Autovolks) who I am very good mates with and ask them to diagnose it 1st then take it next door VW and ask them to diagnose it (just so I know if VW are telling me the truth or not).

I just think its poor that such a low Mileage car fully maintained by VW themselves should have such major issue already.

Thanks again for your replies!!

There is one other point on your side. If you buy a car from a registered motor dealer, and experience a fault or problem within 6 months of the purchase date, the onus is on that dealer to prove that the fault was not present at the time of sale. If all else fails with your service manager & VW Customer Care (and I'd be surprised if it does come to this) follow this route.

Here's a little excerpt from a previous post of mine:

Check your local trading standards & Citizens Advice. Under the Sale & Supply of Goods Act (Consumer Regulations 2002) any motor dealer must warrant their vehicles for 6 months from the date of sale. Note that in such instances the onus is on the dealer to prove that any fault arising was not preexisting the sale. Otherwise the seller is essentially liable.

Hi Loucyffer,

Sorry If I made it sound like I bought it off VW but I never I bought it off the lady who owned it since it was originally a VW Demo.

Thanks!

Ah well. I'd still be surprised if you don't get a good result from VW. The issues with these are well known. VW seem to be very amenable to goodwill as long as the car has a full VW service history. In the US, VW warrant their DSG 'boxes for ten years, after a backlash over problems such as these. Worth remembering when your dealer rolls his eyes & tells you it's out of warranty.

as I had 4 mechatronics units replaced on on TDI (Completely Stock) only travelled 55000km's. Brought from VW with Aftermarket warranty. In a short 6 month ownership.
they replaced it that many times. As I complained about the shudder as far of the sale. All I can say is 4 Mechatronics units later with new DSG fluid change never fixed the shudder.
I personally feel it ended up on the clutch packs. So that would be a gearbox removal and plates replaced.

as others have stated, take it in and ask them to look at it. Even if you have to pay the original inspection fee.
After that, then get the unit replaced under warranty and take it further if need be.

Turns out my problem may not be DSG related at all, Engine Management light come on yesterday called my mate at Autovolks he said bring it down and we will plug it in see what it come on for. Had to stop to put diesel in on the way, filled up got back in the car and it wouldnt start wasnt even cranking just humming! And I had put diesel in and not petrol! So he had to come and recover it, anyway he has called me this morning to say its running again but I need a new throttle body and he thinks that why it was kangerooing before so hopefully when the throttle body is changed problem will be solved!
