ED30 DSG surging at low revs
« on: July 01, 2014, 11:43:34 pm »
Hi guys

Only bought my ed30 yesterday and noticed that it surges when at low revs in 1st and 2nd. Read alot about a mechatronic failure and it seems it's pointing to that! Dsg is smooth as anything in all other gears no judders or anything. Only other thing is I hear an occasional click?

If it is the mechatronics, where do I stand? Will the dealer have to fork out for replacement as it's only just been bought? I have a 6 month warranty but that has a max claim of 1k!

Cheers

Ian

If it's kangarooing in 1st and 2nd then it could be mechatronics, but before panicking about it I'd try and do a DSG reset, this can be done at a VW dealer or look for a member on here with VCDS. Has the DSG been serviced accordingly? Anyway, first thing I'd do is contact the dealer you bought the car from so they are aware of the problem, the sooner you tell them the better.

With regards to the clicking you hear, does this only occur in D mode when the box is gearing down? I had this clicking on my old ed30, would click as it engages into 2nd gear from 3rd, and then it started to do it from 5th into 4th. I had no other symptoms at all though, just the slight click noise. I had the mechatronics replace which didn't cure it, then had clutch packs changed which got rid of it.

Noticed the same thing on our Golf R, sometimes would get a slight click noise when gearing down from 3rd to 2nd so the dealer changed the DSG oil, then replaced mechatronics, then replaced clutch packs. This was covered by warranty so those were the steps they had to take. If I was paying for the repair though I'd ask them just to change the clutch packs as this seems to be the cause.

I don't know if the clicking is classed as an issue or not, I've read threads on various forums from people with the same problem and it seems most people just put up with it as it causes no other symptoms like jerking etc.

If it is the mechatronics unit at fault, £1k wouldn't cover it unfortunately. :sad1:

Good luck with getting it sorted.

Thanks for the reply Mandy, really appreciated!

I have told the dealer about the issue, he is also aware that I have booked it into VW on monday for major service and a road test to check the condition of the DSG.

The DSG has been serviced at 43k and the woman in VW today said that is fine, a friend of mine has a VCDS but was unsure if VW would say "we don't want to touch that" if he reset the DSG with it as its a third party?

The clicking seems to have gone anyway so thats not so much of an issue. It's just the jerking when setting off from a standstill in D. It doesn't do it in manual mode at all, also I have noticed there is no 'clunk' noises or harsh shifts, its just the jerking, everything else runs smooth!

Will see what VW say on monday, if it does end up being the mechatronics, surely the dealer will have to fund the rest of the amount over the £1k (not sure how much it would be over if anyone knows roughly?) due to sale of goods act etc etc etc ha.

Thanks again

Ian

Any advice welcome please. Bought the car from a dealer a week ago today. Just been in VW and for the above fault and they said they can feel the slight surging but don't think it'd gearbox related. The car is due spark plugs so wondering if this could be the issue? Also any other ideas as to what it could be. VW saying to let the fault develop but can't really do that due to the fact it will be too long to return the vehicle if it's anything major.

Cheers in advance

Ian

Spark plugs changed with no help. Going to try a throttle body alignment tonight and see if this helps!  Although engine has no fault codes so unsure if this could be the issue?
