Fuel filter change interval.
« on: September 21, 2011, 01:19:34 pm »
When should the fuel filter be changed, is it every 40k?

Is it supposed to be part of the major (40k) service?

Doesn't look like mines ever been changed, on 2 occasions I have experienced a slight stutter upon acceleration in the higher gears, 3rd/4th, don't know if it's a missfire... Spark plugs were changed 5k miles ago but I might change them again just to see.

Thanks for any advice.

the fuel filter on the TFSI engines isnt a serviceable item , its meant to be on their for the life of the vehicle , a load of bollocks if you ask me.
your stuttering is probably spark plugs.

as mentioned, its not on the service schedule. I had mine changed 2 weeks ago along with the cambelt and waterpump - the mechanic didnt charge me for changing the fuel filter  :happy2:

Its hard to believe any filter can be for the life of the vehicle  :stupid: so had mine changed for peace of mind!

If you paid for fixed price major service then it should be included. See VW site for costs/inclusions.

I mentioned this as i was on a service plan. I was informed its either Fuel filter or Spark Plugs - depending on fuel type. Diesels are fuel filter change and spark plugs are for petrol.

on the other hand, why would vw say you dont need to change it if you do? if you are running v power/momentum maybe the lovely sweet nectar is enough to keep it from getting clogged?

Alex P and Myself changed ours, just to have a look to make sure the fuel tank didnt have any signs of water or sediment. Neither of them did and tbh looking back, isnt worth replacing..

i would say that if you rn the tank down to the minimum before filling up quite often , it might be worth changing it , just in case its picked any sedament up.
theres a couple of posts on the yank sites showing their fuel filters they have cut open when they have changed theirs.
They show differing degrees of dirt and contamination , it might be worth having a look.
What is strange though is a fuel filter used to be a serviceable item , so why the big change of heart ? its not like they are not making money from it.
so unless fuels have got a lot cleaner ? but you still hear horror stories about supermarket fuels.

Well I'm going to pick up a set of new plugs and a cam follower tomorrow, will try  the plugs first and see what happens. Thing is, they are not that old at all but gotta start somewhere I suppose.

I never realised the fuel filter isn't part of the service plan, seems a bit silly.
