Power folding mirrors help needed please
« on: September 22, 2011, 01:06:33 pm »

I retrofitted some power folding mirrors, max door controllers and switch a while back and am having problems with the power folding. I can get the puddle lights and reverse dip to work but no joy in power folding.

I’ve tried to code the folding mirror (MY2008+) option but it says the value is out of range. My car is an 07 ed30 so I guess that’s why it’s saying that.

Some info below:

Your coding is not right, add the features up including the folding again and see what you get.

It won’t let me add the 4096. When I do it comes up with:

I’ve tried 4096 on its own and that message still appears

If thats the case then the mirrors are none folding you can check this by going into the output test and going through the test if they are folding then they will fold in and back out on the test.

You can get the mirrors with the puddle light but no folding...

Sounds like I could have messed up here..  Are you able to confirm if they are power folding or not Darren?

I tried the output test and it didn't scroll through a folding option.

Do all electric power folding mirrors with puddle lights have reverse dip?

My drivers mirror 1K2857508AE and it folds, but my folding passenger mirror is 1K2857507AA (but that may be due to the reverse dip)

Howver 1K2857507AB decodes to 6XW = Exterior mirrors: automatically dimming, electrically foldable/adjustable, separately heated

I would have thought so but I'm not 100%. I think it depends on if the door controller comes with seat memory installed so it can remember the position.

No they don't, it depends on the mirror adjust motor, as there are extra wires required to reverse dip

No dip: (only 3 wires)

Dipping (more wires)

Ok, it sounds like I've got folding ones. In that case I really don't know.

On the coding option of:
0004096 = Folding Mirrors Installed (MY2008+)
Does anyone know why it says (MY2008)?

I think the MY2008+ indicates its for Gen 3 controllers, older cars had Gen 2 controllers, different wiring and different config codes

If you look at the VCDS scan he has GEN3 controllers, and with GEN2 you dont have to code for folding.

As Darren said the acid test is if the mirror will respond to the output tests for folding from the controllers is the real key.

I tried the output test and there was no motor movement.

I spoke to Ross-Tech support and the error 31 means the coding is not supported by that controller, only MY2008 onwards.

Below is a scan of another gti that did have folding mirrors from the factory. This again was a 2007 model so how does the car know it has folding mirrors if you can’t code it? The coding below shows the 4096 is not coded yet they still worked.

Could this be to do with anything else like the need for a newer Can?

In GEN2 they work based on hardware without coding as they just have an open circuit to the switch.  I have GEN2 controllers that I retro fitted and it just needed plugging in with the new switch and then folded, the only difference was coding for puddle lights. +2

I suppose the other thing to check with the mirrors is the number of wires the connector plug has coming from the mirror as the MAx to Low modules have extra pin outs and full function mirrors will have extra wires.
