Should I attempt to fit an RNS-510?
« on: September 07, 2011, 07:52:49 pm »
Yup..as per the title, with next to no experience should I personally attempt to replace the bog standard kit in my mk5 GTI with the RNS-510 or am I just asking for trouble? I've watched videos on YouTube and it doesn't look that taxing..thoughts?

Cheers!

Me too.....was a bit  :surprised: when I looked at doing it. 1st time to a golf. But it really is dead easy.

My top tip.....TAKE YOU TIME!!!!! Slowly remove the plastic trims etc.

Worst that can happen? you brake a couple of platic clips and you have to get another (dash bits)

Do it  :happy2:

I've fitted mine myself, as have a few others. It ain't difficult provided you have the right tools. I got some trim removal tools off ebay which helped. Otherwise as above, take your time. get something to cushion the front screen as it'll be very close to the gear lever when you're fiddling with the cables.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Issues? no. It's a simple plug and play......and the GPS ariel just plugs in the back and (like most) run it up and sit it just under the top air vent (first part you remove)

Is there an 'easy guide' for doing this?  Or is it really so easy there doesn't have to be one

maybe wisebuddah will do one on this thread?

i would be interested in a novice's attempt at this as my skill level is pretty poor and it's something i may want to upgrade to in the future.

Nice one, look forward to it.

Also, what is the difference between all of the version numbers - A, B C, etc?  Are they compatible with a 2006 model?

OK..so I've installed the RNS510.. I found it pretty straight forward as it goes..it's a bit fiddly but if you follow the above install guide you won't go far wrong. I also found the video link below very useful:

http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=GB#/watch?v=HNPkS_lQOvA

I'm yet to encounter battery drain, so I'll be keeping my fingers crossed..however for some reason I can't tune into AM stations, which is annoying as I love talksport..Hmmmm..not sure why, I'll have to do some diggin..

Any thoughts?

Have you connected both the aerial connections on the back? You should have an FM aerial and an AM aerial iirc
