steering pull
« on: April 06, 2009, 02:41:24 pm »
hi guys, was wondering if anyone had a steering pull when going on power. car pulls to the right going on power and then to the left when coming off power?  :driver:

MK5 GTI with DSG and 30000 miles

Any thoughts would be great

Mine doesn't torque steer one bit.

Take it that your standard etc? Checked all the tyre pressures etc?

some 'pull' is normal on FWD cars with unequal length driveshafts, however it should be minimal.
As snapey says tyre pressures first, make sure you are on flat non cambered road while testing.
Are the tyres the same make side to side? same tread depth? damage to wheels?
Next you are looking at suspension components/bushes for issues/wear etc.
A good garage should be able to help you, maybe onto a wheel alignment place?
It will be immeadiately obvious from that whether you have something damaged.

good luck

Car is running Revo stg1. Standard suspension. have checked tyre pressures etc but all ok. car has a very slight steering pull but didnt think this should make it drive this way.
Next stage is getting it up on the ramp and checking the bushes etc.

hi guys, yes you defo notice it when your giving it a boot full. goes to the right then come of the gas and it goes back to where it was. im not noticing any knocking noises etc coming from the car which i thought i would see for excess play in bushes and joints.
the first time i really noticed it was when i put on new tyres but of the same size make and model that were taken off. thought it was down to this so changed the front to the back and the back to the front but this made no difference.
my worry was that there might be something going wrong with the DSG box in the form of torq sensors. car is in warrenty untill august this year so not to much to worry about, i hope!

Have you checked the obvious stuff like tracking and wheel balancing?

going to check the steering geo this week. have a nice fancy blue tooth 4 wheel geo machine at work for the students to mess around with. that should show up any problem.

Ok folks, have had a look at the steering geo and it seems that the O/S/F was toeing out by 1.5mm. its now back in spec so time for a wee test drive. also looked at the suspension components/bushes etc and all was ok. just hope the test drive goes to plan.
will let you later on

check your tyre mate, 1.5mm toe out means that your tyre will be being scrubbed sideways nearly 10 feet each mile you drive
