Best way to buy a spare key
« on: September 22, 2011, 09:14:12 am »
Whats the best way to get a spare key for the GTI

1. Go to the dealers.
2. Go to timpsons as they apprantly do them
3. Buy a 3 button remote off ebay, get the blade cut and then get it coded at the dealers.

Any other options ?

Dont do the ebay option as its a pain in the backside and still work out expensive, I did it this way and am still trying to get my key coded for a decent price locally.

My advice would be to bite the bullet and go to the dealers saves so much hassel.

I bought a key from the dealer, then got an independant to do the immobiliser element. The independant had to extract the hex codes to decript the SKC, which means I've now got that to make future keys easier to code. Not only was the independant more helpful / flexible, they were cheaper for the coding too.

I bought a remote from eBay, key & transponder from hickleys.com, key cut by a local locksmith, got the SKC retrieved by a friendly member  :happy2: then coded it myself (with VCDS) all for less than £50

i am in the same boat...need to get another key but not happy to pay 180 notes to the stealer.  any links to an appropriate ebay/cheap, but good source of the bits needed.  assume stealers are ok about coding keys that they havent provided?
