Am I the only one who thinks it will make no difference at all?

....Only a very small difference but every mph raises the threshold favourably and gives us peace of mind when we know we're driving safely and responsibly but the mph is technically risky for getting stopped/fined etc.

Most people drive at 80mph anyway, and the chances of being pulled over doing 80 are very slim. So will this mean everyone will now drive at 90?

That's what I think many people will misunderstand. The police have turned a blind eye to people traveling at 80mph, but I don't think it will be the case that they'll do the same for people doing 90mph, even if it's the same increment over the official limit.

It's been on radio 1 all morning and the minister they interviewed says it to bring people breaking the law back on the right side of the law, he would've been better off saying it's to bring us in line with Europe as speed campaigners wouldn't be as annoyed by that.

Does the 10% rule still apply incase the speedo isn't reading correctly?? If so, wouldn't you have to be doing 88mph+ to get pulled?? As speed camera's are also 10% + 3mph iirc. Only asking, I'm not trying to find a loophole to break the law

10% + 3mph on 80mph is 91mph. There's no way that is acceptable.

Agreed 80mph is generally ok, but 90mph and alot of the older vehicles will be at their limits, so id imagine the police jumping on top of any speeders.  Also would the 100mph instant ban be raised? you have to also consider the larger speed differential between the hgv/towing traffic because i cant see them being raised

For what it's worth the only tickets I've ever had have been for exactly 93 mph (on my GPS speedo). I think the Police will continue the way they have been doing but simply not pursue or speed clock you until over 80-ish - Unless, of course, your driving is dangerous, in which case they should stop you whatever speed you're doing.

I tend to make sure I don't stay at 93 as it's been an unlucky number for me. Absolutely according to conditions/traffic etc I tend to hover around 85 or so on M-ways.

I wish they'd put up the 60 to 70 but fat chance of that happening. I stick absolutely rigidly to 20/30/40/some 50's regardless of cameras being present or not.

10% + 3mph on 80mph is 91mph. There's no way that is acceptable.

....Do you mean acceptable to you or to authority?

Isn't that 10% + 3mph an unwritten rule which is no longer applied anyway?

Falls more in line with EU limits of 130kph.

Just another example of UK following rules set by the EU.

Not complaining mind!

Although I've driven thousands of miles throughout Europe I've forgotten what the EU limit is on two-way roads. Is it 60mph (in kph) or more? I tend to go my own speed according to conditions unless there are specific signs.

That rules me out then.

At 88mph I start time travelling.

Towns & villages 50kph, urban / 2 way 70 & 100kph autobahn recommended 130kph unless near bridges, large bends, busy exits etc

Cheers, Mike  :drinking:

I prefer the way that the Germans sign their speed limits by incorporating it on the perimeter urban town/village /hamlet names.

To me, but that comes down to my lack of trust in other road users.

....I understand what you mean but it suggests you may be being over cautious to the point of being nervous and that's not a great state of mind for driving. The trick is to be super-aware of what other drivers might do but to also be able to read their body language accurately and, of course, always be focussed enough to take appropriate evasive action. Hesitation can send out the wrong signals to other drivers too. Perhaps I'm wrong is such an assumption about your driving.

You have to kind of 'half-trust' but know what you can do to stay out of trouble. Studying other drivers and their body language is key IMO  :happy2:
