I have the HTC Desire also and compared to my wife's iphone 3gs I would say the Desire is better. 

My choice was initially made on price since I don't really use my phone that often and have no interest in fashion accessories but after using it and comparing it with the wife's Iphone I would still say its the better phone too.

As said, getting on a bit now though.
