Daves Candy White Gti! Progress thread - 1st update.
« on: September 26, 2011, 09:58:24 pm »
Hi,

Im Dave, 21 years old and currently on a placement year whilst in my 3rd year of Uni, earning some money has allowed me to finally upgrade from the Clio 182!

Picked up my Golf a few weeks ago and have been loving it :)

Came from a Racing Blue Clio 182, this is so much better built and in another league! Still stupidly impressed by it :D

2008 Plate
Candy White
36000 miles

Only thing that annoys me is the standard head unit, and the black rear bumper. I have already taken steps to sort the head unit out, next up is the rear bumper and skirts, looking at going to the edition 30 route once I have a bit more money in my bank after buying this and the RNS510.

Here are a few pics of it before a thorough clean, and after.

Snowfoamed
Washed using Megs Gold Class
Clayed, removing some stubborn tar
Hand Polished with Sonus (Enhance)
Waxed with Collinite 916.
Tyre Dressing - Sonus

Interior shot - Going to add an armrest as well in the near future!

First Mod

Having always been able to use my iPod with my previous head unit in the Clio, it was something I needed to have again. Did a lot of research and the RNS510 was definitely the way to go, a lot of people recommended Nick from R32OC, so messaged him and he managed to get me a Version C, LED RNS510 with speed cameras as well as having Video in Motion and a glovebox MDI kit added by him. Made the long journey from Birmingham to Essex and back as he doesn't like to deliver any more.

When he did it, he also found a standard Volkswagen iPod adaptor hidden behind the head unit, so currently trying to sell that on eBay (PM me if you want details)

Anyway,

Next to come -

Rear Edition 30 Bumper
Edition 30 Side skirts

I went to the bodyshop I mentioned in Digbeth, very nice shop, some nice BMWs in there including a 10 plate X5, a Nissan GTR and a few Audi's. Definitely the sort of bodyshop you would like your car to be, they quoted £350, but said you would get a SPOT ON colour match if you did use the smooth edition 30 parts, as I said it was something I was considering, and that if the standard GTI parts were sprayed, it would be a very good match, but maybe not 100%.

So I left it for now, and may invest in an Edition 30 rear bumper if one pops up in the next month or two. Also wanted the RNS510 and couldn't afford both so soon after buying the car!

Very happy with the head unit, was a great purchase!

£350 just for the rear bumper? Looks a great purchase, not fancy a 3 door?  :drinking:

Bumper and skirts for that, price is slightly higher due to extra work sanding down the textured Gti bits, would be cheaper to do the Ed 30 parts which will probably be what I go for!

With regards to doors, I was more bothered about the age/mileage/condition etc. Quite like having a 5 dr strangely enough, nice and easy when me and mates go somewhere for once rather than all the climbing!

Surely buying the edition 30 parts will raise the cost as i looked into this but for price of parts its cheaper to get gti parts de-textured.

Will look into it more in the new year think im going to get mine mapped first lol. Let me know if you get any other quotes or get the work done.

Ill update in here mate.

I think i just slightly prefer the Ed30 rear bumper, will prob just have the standard skirts de textured. Will see if anything crops up in the next couple of months anyway!

Also after an armrest, so no rush in which order to do things!

so far so good Dave, which bodyshop in digbeth are you referring as I need to sort black skirts and rear bumper on my GTi as well. Also how much did you paid for RNS 510 if you don't mind me asking. I removed my Pioneer AVH-3300BT from old car but after going through few threads, it seems RNS 510 is quite popular with mk5's and now I'm confused shall I put 3300BT or go the same route.

Looks good mate, just a shame they didn't colour code the bottom half of the rear bumper.
